Nicolas Cage has never been shy about his opposition to artificial intelligence, but his convictions have apparently put him at odds with Amazon. Speaking at New York Comic Con on Saturday, the actor revealed a disagreement with the studio over his recently canceled Prime Video series “Spider-Noir.”
“Amazon is a very AI-friendly company, to the tune of $50 billion invested in OpenAI,” Cage said during his Spotlight panel, according to Variety. “I am not an AI-friendly actor, so it’s like, connect those dots! I’m not a member of their club. I didn’t sign the waiver to let him use AI on ‘Spider-Noir.’ I’m probably not going to be working with that studio again, but that’s okay.”
The comments come just weeks after Amazon canceled “Spider-Noir” after one season, despite the series reportedly drawing 2.6 billion viewing minutes in its first six weeks and earning 11 Emmy nominations (shocking to say the least). Cage didn’t suggest the AI dispute caused the cancellation, and it’s unclear exactly what the waiver would have allowed Amazon to do.
Actors, alongside other creatives (mainly unionized screenwriters), are obviously going to be resistant to AI, not only the use of generative tools on projects (could end up killing a slew of jobs in the industry) but the idea that actors’ likeness and digital scans could be used in all sorts of ways without their consent is super creepy and likely why it has been quite a sticking point with various unions. We cannot exactly blame folks like Cage for trying to protect not only their image, but also the quality of the projects they’re involved with.
As you might have already gathered, the end of “Spider Noir” doesn’t mean that Amazon/Prime has ended its relationship with Sony Pictures when it comes to live-action TV projects, as it was revealed not too long ago that they would be looking to adapt the controversial Clone Saga (featuring Peter Parker clones Ben Reilly and Kaine Parker) from the comics for a new untitled streaming series with “American Born Chinese” creator Kelvin Yu involved. There were also attempts to turn Cindy Moon’s superhero persona, “Silk,” into a series, but the studio reportedly scrapped it after extensive retooling.
From these post-cancellation comments, Cage doesn’t seem terribly upset about moving on. Still, it seems likely he’ll reprise the part in animation for “Beyond the Spider-Verse,” even if only in a limited capacity. What happens on the feature film front after “Beyond” wraps up the trilogy of Miles Morales-focused films remains to be seen.
