Trump picks Katie Zacharia as White House press secretary, replacing Karoline Leavitt ahead of the November 2026 midterm elections

Katie Zacharia, an attorney who has worked for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Trump’s media company, will be the next White House press secretary. Trump announced his choice Friday. She succeeds Karoline Leavitt, who left the administration in August to spend more time with her children.

The briefing room lectern has seen little activity since Leavitt’s departure. Vice President JD Vance and Attorney General Todd Blanche have each held a formal briefing. Just two in total. Zacharia now takes over as the midterm elections approach in less than a month.

Trump’s announcement left little doubt about what he liked in his new hire:

“She has an unblemished record of support, and has been a loyal and brilliant supporter, right from the beginning. She is, likewise, a devoted fan and member of MAGA!”

A California native, Zacharia is 41, a mother of four, and a Pepperdine law graduate. She worked Trump’s campaigns, became a regular face on Fox News and Newsmax, and logged government time as a DHS spokesperson and deputy assistant secretary for public affairs.

That DHS assignment lasted two months and ended in March. She joined Trump Media & Technology Group in June as a senior communications adviser. She also lists work as general counsel for Richard Grenell’s Fix California organization on her LinkedIn profile.

Trump has chosen someone who already knows him and has defended his policies publicly. Former press secretary Sean Spicer singled out that relationship, saying Zacharia “clearly has [the] trust of President Trump.”

She will need it. Reporters asking for the president’s position expect the person at the lectern to know it. When an answer needs correcting, the correction becomes news, too. There’s less room for a loose answer here than on a television panel.

Zacharia responded to the appointment in a statement posted on X:

“Thank you to President Trump for the distinguished privilege of serving as White House Press Secretary.

Serving President Trump and the American people at this critical 250-year mark is the honor of a lifetime.”

She said she would work with the White House press corps and reporters elsewhere to explain the administration’s accomplishments. She also acknowledged the predecessor against whom she will be measured: “Following the fabulous Karoline Leavitt is a high standard, and one worth meeting.”

Leavitt announced August 12 that she was leaving and finished August 27. Her next job begins November 1, when she joins Fox News as an on-air contributor.

Sarah Huckabee Sanders also sent congratulations. Having served as Trump’s press secretary during his first term, she included some advice:

“Best advice I ever got: Don’t be anyone other than who God created you to be. White House press secretary is an amazing and challenging job. Best of luck to you and remember it’s not the critics in the media who define you – you have a Creator who has already done that.

We are cheering on!”

Zacharia said she looks forward to working with the press corps. Sanders thought she should hear a little about the critics first.
