Capcom wants to transform its proprietary RE Engine into an “AI-generation game engine,” envisioning a future where its developers can “create games together with AI.”
The company detailed its plans during Capcom Open Conference RE:2026 on October 2. Programmer Satoshi Ishida explained that modern games have become increasingly massive and time-consuming to produce, while Capcom now has more than 2,000 developers using RE Engine. Integrating AI into development workflows is consequently becoming an important part of improving efficiency.
Rather than replacing RE Engine, Capcom is gradually upgrading it through a project called REX. The initiative covers numerous areas of development, including performance, programming tools, data handling, quality assurance and production efficiency.
One of REX’s long-term goals is to make the engine easier for AI systems to understand. Capcom says this could eventually allow AI to understand and automatically create programs, perform test plays and search for bugs.
Capcom is even making some of its underlying technologies, including RE and RE, open source. Ishida said one purpose of publicly releasing the technology is to allow it to be used for AI training.
Despite the ambitious plans, Capcom has drawn a distinction between using AI to assist development and generating the finished assets players see. Earlier this year, the company stated that it “will not implement assets generated by AI into our games,” while saying it was exploring AI applications in areas including graphics, sound and programming.
RE Engine debuted with Resident Evil 7 in 2017 and has since powered more than 27 Capcom games. REX is intended to evolve that existing technology for the next generation rather than replace it with an entirely new engine.
