AI 기반 신약개발 기업 파로스아이바이오(대표 윤정혁)는 지난 28일 호주 시드니대학교에서 열린 제3회 ASBMB(호주생화학분자생물학회)–KSBMB(한국생화학분자생물학회) 공동 심포지엄에 김규태 호주법인대표 겸 사업개발 총괄 사장(CBO)이 연사로 참여했다.

이번 심포지엄은 글로벌 생명과학 학술행사 ‘ComBio 2026’과 연계해 마련됐다. 한국과 호주의 생화학·분자생물학 분야 연구자와 바이오 산업 관계자들이 연구 성과와 기술 동향을 공유하고 양국 간 연구·산업 협력 방안을 논의했다.

김 대표는 ‘산업 협력(Industry Engagement)’ 세션에서 파로스아이바이오의 AI 기반 신약개발 역량과 글로벌 사업개발 전략을 발표했다. 자체 AI 신약개발 플랫폼과 내부 R&D를 기반으로 국내외 제약·바이오 기업 및 연구기관과 공동연구를 진행하고 글로벌 파트너십을 사업개발로 연결하는 전략을 소개했다.

2019년 호주법인 설립…연구·임상 네트워크 사업개발로 연결

파로스아이바이오는 2019년 호주법인을 설립한 이후 현지 연구기관과 협력 기반을 구축해왔다. 시드니대학교를 비롯해 호주 혈액암 연구그룹(ALLG), 피터 맥컬럼 암센터, WEHI 연구소, 호주 소아암 연구소(CCIA) 등과 공동연구 및 임상 협력을 진행하고 있다.

호주는 라스모티닙(PHI-101)을 비롯한 주요 파이프라인의 임상과 공동연구를 위한 글로벌 R&D·오픈이노베이션 거점 가운데 하나로 활용하고 있다. 이번 심포지엄 참여를 계기로 현지 연구자와 바이오 기업과의 네트워크를 추가로 확보하고 공동연구 및 사업협력 기회를 발굴한다는 구상이다.

회사는 올해 내부 연구 역량 강화와 오픈이노베이션 확대를 축으로 하는 ‘파로스아이바이오 2.0’ 전략도 추진하고 있다. 보건복지부와 국가신약개발사업단(KDDF), 중소벤처기업부 등이 추진하는 연구개발 과제에 참여하며 외부 연구기관과의 협업 범위를 확대하고 있다.

지난달에는 코오롱제약과 차세대 상피세포성장인자수용체(EGFR) 저해제 ‘PHI-701’ 공동연구개발 본계약을 체결했다. 양사는 후보물질 발굴에 이어 비임상·임상개발까지 협력 범위를 확대한 상태다.

김규태 파로스아이바이오 호주법인대표 겸 사업개발 총괄 사장은 “글로벌 오픈이노베이션 전략의 일환으로 호주 및 미국 현지 연구기관 및 바이오텍과의 협력 기반을 꾸준히 확대해 왔다”며 “앞으로도 국내외 공동연구와 이를 기반한 사업개발 기회를 적극 발굴해 글로벌 오픈이노베이션을 구체적인 협력 성과로 연결해 나가겠다”고 말했다.

한편 ComBio 2026은 ASBMB 등 호주·뉴질랜드 주요 생명과학 학회가 참여하는 학술행사로 9월 29일부터 10월 1일까지 호주 시드니에서 열린다.

This symposium was organized in conjunction with the global life science academic event 'ComBio 2026'. Researchers in the fields of biochemistry and molecular biology and bio-industry stakeholders from Korea and Australia shared research achievements and technological trends and discussed ways to cooperate in research and industry between the two countries.

CEO Kim presented Pharos I-Bio's AI-based drug discovery capabilities and global business development strategy during the 'Industry Engagement' session. He introduced a strategy of conducting joint research with domestic and international pharmaceutical and biotech companies and research institutions based on the company's proprietary AI drug discovery platform and internal R&D, and connecting global partnerships to business development.

Established Australian subsidiary in 2019… Connected to research and clinical network business development

Since establishing its Australian subsidiary in 2019, Pharos I Bio has built a foundation for cooperation with local research institutions. It is conducting joint research and clinical collaborations with the University of Sydney, the Australian Allergy and Hematological Cancer Group (ALLG), the Peter McCallum Cancer Centre, the WeHHI Institute, and the Australian Childhood Cancer Research Institute (CCIA).

Australia is being utilized as one of the global R&D and open innovation hubs for clinical trials and collaborative research on key pipelines, including lasmotinib (PHI-101). Through participation in this symposium, the plan is to further secure networks with local researchers and biotech companies and identify opportunities for joint research and business cooperation.

The company is also pursuing the 'Pharos I-Bio 2.0' strategy this year, centered on strengthening internal research capabilities and expanding open innovation. It is expanding the scope of collaboration with external research institutions by participating in research and development projects promoted by the Ministry of Health and Welfare, the Korea Drug Development Fund (KDDF), and the Ministry of SMEs and Startups.

Last month, a formal agreement was signed with Kolon Pharmaceutical for the joint research and development of 'PHI-701,' a next-generation epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) inhibitor. Following the discovery of candidate substances, the two companies have expanded the scope of their cooperation to include non-clinical and clinical development.

Kim Kyu-tae, Representative of Pharos I-Bio Australia and Head of Business Development, stated, “As part of our global open innovation strategy, we have steadily expanded our foundation for cooperation with local research institutions and biotech companies in Australia and the United States.” He added, “Going forward, we will actively identify opportunities for joint research both domestically and internationally, as well as business development based on such research, to translate global open innovation into concrete collaborative results.”

Meanwhile, ComBio 2026 is an academic event involving major life science societies from Australia and New Zealand, such as the ASBMB, and will be held in Sydney, Australia from September 29 to October 1.

2019年オーストラリア法人設立…研究・臨床ネットワーク事業開発につながる

ファロスアイバイオは2019年にオーストラリア法人を設立した後、現地の研究機関と協力基盤を構築してきた。シドニー大学をはじめ、オーストラリア血液がん研究グループ(ALLG)、ピーター・マックラム・アームセンター、WEHI研究所、オーストラリア小児がん研究所(CCIA)などと共同研究および臨床協力を進めている。

オーストラリアはラスモチニブ(PHI-101)をはじめとする主要パイプラインの臨床と共同研究のためのグローバルR&D・オープンイノベーション拠点の一つとして活用している。今回のシンポジウム参加を契機に現地研究者とバイオ企業とのネットワークを追加確保し、共同研究及び事業協力機会を発掘するという構想だ。

同社は今年、内部研究能力の強化とオープンイノベーション拡大を軸とする「ファロスアイバイオ2.0」戦略も推進している。保健福祉部と国家新薬開発事業団(KDDF)、中小ベンチャー企業部などが推進する研究開発課題に参加し、外部研究機関との協業範囲を拡大している。

先月はコーロン製薬と次世代上皮細胞成長因子受容体(EGFR)阻害剤「PHI-701」共同研究開発本契約を締結した。両社は候補物質の発掘に続き、非臨床・臨床開発まで協力範囲を拡大した状態だ。

Suite à la découverte de substances candidates, les deux entreprises ont élargi leur collaboration aux phases de développement préclinique et clinique.

Kim Kyu-tae, représentant de Pharos I-Bio Australie et responsable du développement commercial, a déclaré : « Dans le cadre de notre stratégie mondiale d’innovation ouverte, nous avons progressivement renforcé notre partenariat avec les institutions de recherche et les entreprises de biotechnologie locales en Australie et aux États-Unis. » Il a ajouté : « À l’avenir, nous identifierons activement les opportunités de recherche conjointe, tant au niveau national qu’international, ainsi que les opportunités de développement commercial découlant de ces recherches, afin de traduire l’innovation ouverte mondiale en résultats concrets. »
