Angel Robotics Converts Human Movement into AI Training Data… Unveils Physical AI Research Robot 'phai-x1'
In physical AI research, a barrier as significant as the algorithms themselves is the robot hardware required to actually operate them. To verify new control methods or AI models, researchers must start with robot design, fabrication, and sensor configuration, requiring considerable time and resources before they can focus on their research topic. To reduce this process, Angel Robotics has introduced a wearable robot platform that allows researchers to run their own algorithms on common hardware and conduct experiments immediately. The key is to collect not only the robot's status but also human movements, such as muscle activity and ground reaction force, to create data that physical AI can learn from.
Wearable robot company Angel Robotics has unveiled 'phai-x1,' a wearable robot for physical AI research and development. phai-x1 was developed based on the hardware of Angel Robotics' walking assistance robot, 'ANGEL SUIT H10.' It was designed to allow researchers to conduct research by applying their own control algorithms to existing hardware, rather than fabricating a separate wearable robot from scratch.

Product development began in the middle of last year. The goal is to provide a common research environment where researchers from different fields, including robotics, control engineering, physical AI, biomechanics, human motion analysis, and biomedical and rehabilitation engineering, can utilize the same hardware while focusing on their respective research topics.
The phai-x1 controls the left and right hip joints independently. Researchers can directly configure desired programs through the 'XM10' expansion module, which is responsible for implementing user algorithms and collecting data. The designed control algorithm can be executed 1,000 times per second at a frequency of 1 kHz to apply it to an actual robot and verify the results.
Beyond AI that only sees robots, turning human muscles and movements into data
Another feature of the phai-x1 is its ability to record both the robot's own movements and human physical reactions simultaneously. It is configured to collect joint movement and robot status data during walking while allowing for the connection of various external sensors.
It can be integrated with an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) that detects body tilt and movement, an Electromyography (EMG) sensor that checks muscle activity, and a Ground Reaction Force (GRF) sensor that measures the force generated when a foot steps on the ground. Through this, it is possible to obtain data not only on what movements the robot performed, but also on how the human body moved and how the muscles reacted at the same moment.
The collected data can be used for analyzing human gait and human-robot interaction, estimating movement intentions, and assistive control tailored to user movements. It is also designed to be used for research on human motion data, including AI reinforcement learning-based wearable robot control.
The feasibility of its application in actual research and educational environments was also tested. At the 'IFAC Wearable Robot Challenge 2026,' an international robot competition held last August, most participants encountered phai-x1 for the first time, but after receiving about two hours of on-site training, they began developing algorithms.
Over two days, participating teams implemented different control and sensing systems using the same phai-x1 hardware. Developments ranged from game interfaces utilizing the movement of wearable robots to walking control on uneven surfaces, slip detection and assistance control, walking assistance for hemiplegic pedestrians, and electromyography-based performance evaluation.
Instead of each team designing and manufacturing robot hardware separately, this allows them to focus on control, sensing, and AI algorithm development while using the same platform. Based on this example, Angel Robotics plans to utilize phai-x1 not only for research but also for physical AI and wearable robot education.
The target recipients will also be expanded to include universities, public research institutions, corporate laboratories, university hospitals and medical college laboratories, and biomedical and rehabilitation engineering research institutions. The scope of application will be expanded beyond product sales to include educational programs, research projects, robot competitions, and joint research.
"Camera footage alone is not sufficient for AI to properly understand human movements," said Gong Kyung-cheol, Head of the Future Technology Institute at Angel Robotics. "Phai-x1 is a platform that records the forces exchanged between humans and robots, the timing of muscle activation, and the force generated when a foot touches the ground, storing them as data." He added, "I hope that phai-x1 will serve as a common research foundation for researchers across various fields and contribute to the growth of the domestic physical AI research ecosystem and the industry as a whole."
