Dime Research, KAIST, and Sky Intelligence Connect From Robots to Entire Factories… Manufacturing Physical AI Collaboration

For physical AI to enter manufacturing sites, a single smart robot is insufficient. Autonomous manufacturing can only be achieved when production facilities, logistics systems, and different types of robots are interconnected and move in alignment with the entire factory workflow. This requires synthetic data to supplement data that is difficult to obtain in the actual field, as well as AI research tailored to the manufacturing environment. KAIST, Sky Intelligence, and Dime Research are embarking on a collaboration that combines research, data, and field execution technology to connect the entire process from research to demonstration and commercialization of manufacturing physical AI.

Dime Research signed a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Sky Intelligence and the KAIST Manufacturing Physical AI Research Institute on the 21st to collaborate on physical AI technology and expand its industrial applications. The core of this agreement is to connect the research, synthetic data, and manufacturing and logistics field technologies held by each of the three institutions into a single collaborative structure. The scope of cooperation will be expanded to include identifying joint research, business, and demonstration projects, as well as fostering specialized personnel, exchanging technology, and developing domestic and international markets.

The KAIST Manufacturing Physical AI Research Institute has been responsible for advanced research and the development of core technologies for manufacturing physical AI based on AI, robotics, and manufacturing systems.

Sky Intelligence is applying synthetic data technology to physical AI. It has been developing data technologies that can be utilized in manufacturing environments, such as conducting a joint proof of concept (PoC) with ABB Robotics and signing a strategic cooperation framework.

Daim Research possesses integrated control and orchestration technologies that connect different robots and equipment in manufacturing and logistics sites, as well as digital twin-based simulation technologies. Going beyond controlling the movements of individual robots, the company is developing autonomous manufacturing solutions that adjust robot paths, task assignments, and schedules based on the overall production flow of the entire factory.

Trained with synthetic data and verified with digital twins… connected all the way to the actual factory

The three institutions will first identify joint research and demonstration projects that can apply manufacturing physical AI to real-world sites. The focus is on developing technologies that connect different components of the manufacturing environment, ranging from equipment and logistics systems to individual robots and swarm control for operating multiple robots simultaneously.

The process also involves verifying AI technologies developed during the research phase in actual manufacturing environments. The vision is to create a structure where research results do not stop at individual technology development but lead to field application and commercialization.

Dime Research has been developing technology to comprehensively calculate robot paths, task assignments, and schedules for manufacturing environments, such as those for semiconductors and secondary batteries, where hundreds to thousands of robots move simultaneously. This method utilizes digital twin simulations to identify potential collisions, delays, or bottlenecks before application to actual equipment.

We also jointly promote the training of specialized personnel and technology exchange. Focusing on physical AI, digital twins, synthetic data, robotics, and autonomous manufacturing, we plan and operate education, seminars, technology exchange, and demonstration-linked programs for companies and industry stakeholders.

In market development, the three institutions will connect their domestic and international industry-academia and corporate partner and customer networks. They plan to identify new joint research and business opportunities through conferences, forums, technology demonstrations, manufacturing site tours, and business matching.

Lee Jae-cheol, CEO of Sky Intelligence, said, “We will connect research and technology accumulated in different fields with experience from manufacturing sites to identify joint research, business, and demonstration projects, and expand the manufacturing physical AI ecosystem.”

“For manufacturing physical AI to create actual industrial value, it is necessary to go beyond the performance of individual AIs or robots and ensure that various robots, equipment, and systems are connected as a single flow and operated intelligently,” said Hwang Il-hoe, CTO of Dime Research. “We will verify each company’s technological capabilities in actual manufacturing sites to create application cases that lead to autonomous manufacturing.”

“Physical AI is not completed solely through laboratory technology; it must be verified and developed by encountering complex problems in actual manufacturing sites,” said Jang Young-jae, Director of the Manufacturing Physical AI Lab at KAIST. “We will create a structure where the results of our joint research lead to demonstration and industrial expansion by combining Daim Research’s capabilities in manufacturing applications and Sky Intelligence’s synthetic data technology with KAIST’s research capabilities.”
