A new survey from Japan’s Computer Entertainment Supplier’s Association found that 85.8% of game developers surveyed are using generative AI for work, while 63% say they use the technology on a regular basis.

The findings come from the Computer Entertainment Supplier’s Association (CESA), which released a preview of its CESA Games Industry Report 2026 on September 17 alongside Tokyo Game Show 2026. The report includes surveys examining generative AI use among both commercial game developers and CESA member companies.

Among surveyed developers, 85.8% reported using generative AI for work. When asked about frequency, 63% said they use it regularly, while the combined share of developers who use it either regularly or occasionally reached 88.88%.

The developer survey received 1,349 valid responses and primarily covered people working commercially as producers, directors, engineers, artists and in other game development positions.

CESA also surveyed its member companies about how they are approaching the technology. The organization contacted 220 member companies, primarily medium and large businesses, and received 48 valid responses. Improving efficiency and productivity was the most commonly cited benefit companies expected from generative AI.

However, the results also suggest companies aren’t simply allowing AI-generated material to flow directly into games unchecked. Human review, correction and supervision was the most commonly reported management measure. Many companies also restrict which AI tools employees are permitted to use or have policies against using generated output without further human involvement.

CESA Managing Director Tsutomu Masuda said the results show that generative AI is becoming steadily and widely adopted across game development. At the same time, he acknowledged unresolved issues surrounding the technology, particularly copyright and other rights-related concerns.

CESA’s previous 2025 survey found that 51% of responding Japanese game companies were already using generative AI, including for generating visual assets, story and text creation, and programming assistance. The new surveys aren’t directly identical in their respondent groups, but they indicate that AI tools have become increasingly commonplace within the industry.
