NVIDIA has officially confirmed that the company is working to bring DLSS 5 neural rendering to the previous-generation GeForce RTX 40-Series "Ada Lovelace." Previously, it was believed that DLSS 5 technology would be exclusive to the latest GeForce RTX 50-Series "Blackwell" and future models, without looking back. As NVIDIA continues to focus on hardware-software cooptimization, we now have official confirmation that the GeForce RTX 40-Series will also receive a DLSS 5 port. However, the launch of DLSS 5 on the GeForce RTX 40-Series is secondary, as NVIDIA is still preparing and optimizing performance for the GeForce RTX 50-Series to ensure that the model won't significantly impact the final game performance, despite reportedly being very compute-heavy.NVIDIADLSS 5 is our most computationally demanding model to date. Since we initially announced it in March, we've achieved a 5X performance gain and there's more to come. Our current focus is on optimizing performance for the GeForce RTX 50 Series with model updates expected later this fall. Once RTX 50 Series performance is more fully tuned, we plan to work on expanding official support to the GeForce RTX 40 Series.
Officially, DLSS 5 launches with 2K Games' latest NBA 2K27, which goes live today. It is supported on all GeForce RTX 50-Series GPUs, RTX 50 laptops, and GeForce NOW, allowing gamers to enjoy the benefits of neural rendering. For now, DLSS 5 is optimized for "Blackwell's" fifth-generation Tensor cores, while support for the fourth-generation Tensor cores in "Ada Lovelace" is still being optimized. Readers may recall that NVIDIA initially used two GeForce RTX 5090 GPUs for DLSS 5 demos, later settling on a single GPU with optimizations. For last-generation GPUs to achieve good performance, we will need to wait a bit longer.

#1 "Once RTX 50 Series performance is more fully tuned, we plan to work on expanding official support to the GeForce RTX 40 Series."- But realistically, you're going to need upscaling and frame generation on RTX 5090, what chance do you think you have of actually gaming with DLSS 5 on RTX 40? #2 i wonder if dlss 5.0 didnt leak out early.. would nvidia support it for 40 series? #3 Wondering of RTX3000 support will come? #4
lexluthermiesterWondering of RTX3000 support will come?No FP8 support. It’s theoretically possible, the modded version does TECHNICALLY run on Ampere, but the performance is so bad as to make it impractical. I don’t think even NV themselves can optimize the model enough. #5 I wonder how much perf can/will improve with FP4 for Blackwell, and fallback FP8 for Ada, maybe even Fp16 for Ampere down the line.
Definitely has some limitations in the initial showing, like being tied to the output res which I believe modders have already worked around.
Keen to see how much this improves as it continues to bake. #6 DLSS 5 is currently very heavy since it's applying its neural pass on the full-sized final image, as far as I understand it which to me is essentially...wasteful. So I'd guess the next step, and what Nvidia were aiming for but I guess there was a hard date limit, will be an upscaling pass built in to DLSS 5.1 or whatever similar to how RR is resolutuion sensitive hence it has an upscaling pass built into the model. #7 Did someone not expect this consumer friendly company to port it backwards just like they did with the best upscaler on the market that works on a 349$ 8 year old GPU? Other companies should really take notes. I'd love to hate nvidia but I can't, they keep giving me ammunition to love them. What a company! #8
Hyderzi wonder if dlss 5.0 didnt leak out early.. would nvidia support it for 40 series?NVidia might be tempted to make future versions NVFP4 only which would simultaneously make it perform better on 5000 series and worse on 4000 series. The leaked version showed 4000 series got similar performance due to both series supporting hardware FP8, and now that Neural rendering has been unlocked on AMD cards the easiest way for Nvidia to gatekeep the technology would be moving it to NVFP4 (AMD 9000 series supports INT4 but not FP4).
Even if Nvidia keep a legacy FP8 version for the 4000 series the performance could potentially be far better on an NVFP4 version so if the technology takes off gamers would really need a 5000 or 6000 series to enjoy using it. #9 Tank the performance so that people buy faster cards. Profit
Edit: Well, I'm still not against it. It can work great with some games? #10 Zero interest, not only will it cripple perf but it used more power at the same time, hard pass. #11
"Once RTX 50 Series performance is more fully tuned, we plan to work on expanding official support to the GeForce RTX 40 Series. "So no exact timing when 40 series will get DLSS5, but when the feature barely runs on a $5k 5090 it probably wouldn't work well on anything older.
And then there's the increased risk of the power connector melting. #12
JustBenchingDid someone not expect this consumer friendly company to port it backwards just like they did with the best upscaler on the market that works on a 349$ 8 year old GPU?Are you living in alternate universe?
1) The upscaler (TM 1.0 from DLSS 4.0) working on 8 year old GPU is not the best.
2) You can launch the best upscaler available today (TM 2.0 from DLSS 4.5) on that 8 year old GPU but with heavy performance impact.
Nobody can deliver what we can promise.
The more you buy the more you ... pay. #13 I demand DLSS5 support for my 1070 Ti!
I can no longer game, without an AI-Slop Filter on everything!
I NEED this SOO much Guys!
Hecate91And then there's the increased risk of the power connector melting. We'll see the rise of a whole new industry of DLSS 5 compatible cables, protection dongles, connector coolers, fire extinguishers, insurance policies, and etc. #15 HUB tested the actual performance hit without Frame gen
It is nothing but a 'Milk the consumer' BUG feature
WirkoWe'll see the rise of a whole new industry of DLSS 5 compatible cables, protection dongles, connector coolers, fire extinguishers, insurance policies, and etc. That is the spirit of a real Business Man!
You see not a fault, you see endless business opportunities!
😁 #17
melkor_unlimitedAre you living in alternate universe? So the best upscaler is available to 349$ RTX 2060 from 2018. We agree, but somehow I live in a different universe? Are you okay man? #18

GrimlingI NEED this SOO much Guys!I always get a kick out of people ripping on it while not even using it's own output as the example, a visual strawman. You guys are a riot! #19

wolfI always get a kick out of people ripping on it while not even using it's own output as the example, a visual strawman. You guys are a riot! :roll:Well if they used the actual output they couldn't make an argument since it would look better than with it off. So I kinda get why they are doing it. Is it dishonest? Of course. Is there any other way for them to crap on it? No.
The steps we took though
Step 1) It's trash and im not going to use it and Im not going to buy the GPUs that are needed to run it
Step 2) it's trash and im not going to use it and Im not going to buy the GPUs that are needed to run it but im going to complain that they are not backporting to the previews generation that im not going to buy either
Step 3) it's trash and im not going to use it and Im not going to buy the GPUs that are needed to run it but im going to complain that they are not backporting to the previews generation that im not going to buy either and im also going to complain that people aren't complaining enough
Step 4) They are porting it? Oh who cares it barely runs on a 5090 and what about the connectors!!!
DUDE, it's what I told you the other day. Without our pushback we would never get this comedy gold stuff. They find themselves in a hole and they keep digging, lol #20

JustBenchingSo the best upscaler is available to 349$ RTX 2060 from 2018. We agree, but somehow I live in a different universe? Are you okay man?So it doesn't matter how well this upscaler works on cards from 2018 as long as you can keep repeating their marketing speak, interesting universe you live in.
JustBenchingWell if they used the actual output they couldn't make an argument since it would look better than with it off. So I kinda get why they are doing it. Is it dishonest? Of course. Is there any other way for them to crap on it? No.1. It's called having an opinion on a very subjective feature. And are you going to buy a 5090? I'm asking since the feature needs one to run it sufficiently.

2. see #1
3. see #1
4. Again see #1, and lets just ignore how HWUB had their 5090 melt while testing, although certain people would still rather call it fake or clickbait.
Why does there need to be pushback, can't you just let people decided whether they like the feature or not?
It's interesting seeing people treat this like some kind of war that needs to be won, oh well it's been fun to see that people can't take a joke for what this AI slop filter is. #22
JustBenchingDUDE, it's what I told you the other day. Without our pushback we would never get this comedy gold stuff. They find themselves in a hole and they keep digging, lolYeeep, stage 5- Projection.
Ahh well it's fun seeing how hard they argue about something they won't use. #23 Wish people would just chill, and see where this goes and not be such prejudice warriors. This is not forced on anyone. #24
OnasiNo FP8 support. It’s theoretically possible, the modded version does TECHNICALLY run on Ampere, but the performance is so bad as to make it impractical. I don’t think even NV themselves can optimize the model enough. It was just a thought. The 3080 has been holding up very well. It's the GTX1080 of the RTX line. #25
Bwaze"Once RTX 50 Series performance is more fully tuned, we plan to work on expanding official support to the GeForce RTX 40 Series."RTX 50 series owners will be putting Frame Generation at X4 and X6. RTX 40 series owners will be hitting a wall faster because they can't go over X2 Frame Generation. That could work nicely for Nvidia if prices where normal with many RTX 40 owners rushing to upgrade to get better performance and higher multipliers for Frame Generation. But at the current market conditions will an RTX 4080 owner sell their card to go to an RTX 5070, or pay the extra money for the RTX 5080 just for DLSS5? Add your own comment
