Beyond AI Services to Joint Research Partners

This collaboration aims to demonstrate and analyze the impact of AI on the productivity of cutting-edge natural science research by utilizing Liner’s AI research platform, 'Liner Scholar,' and AI research agents specialized in materials science. It is particularly significant as it marks the first instance where Liner participates as a joint research partner, moving beyond merely supplying AI services to university laboratories to conduct research together.

Both parties will pursue key initiatives including ▲demonstrating a research workflow based on Reiner Scholar, ▲jointly developing an AI research agent specialized for materials science, and ▲quantitative analysis of AI research contributions. Reiner will be responsible for developing the AI pipeline and models, while Seoul National University's BMNL will handle the provision of domain expertise, research verification, and data verification.

In the first joint project, BMNL researchers will utilize Reiner Schola throughout the entire research process, from hypothesis formulation and literature review to writing papers. Based on the research data accumulated during this process, they plan to jointly develop an AI research agent specialized for materials science and quantitatively analyze the impact of AI utilization on research speed and outcomes.

Professor Nam Ki-tae of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Seoul National University is a researcher who has led research in the fields of biomimetic materials engineering, artificial photosynthesis, and chiral nanomaterials, and through this collaboration, he verifies the effectiveness of AI-based research methods.

"Professor Nam Ki-tae said, 'Rigorously demonstrating the value that AI research tools create in actual laboratory workflows is meaningful research in itself,' and added, 'I hope this collaboration will serve as a precedent for a new research method that combines AI technology and cutting-edge science.'"

Kim Jin-woo, CEO of Liner, said, “It is meaningful to verify with data the extent to which AI contributes to scientific research together with Professor Nam Ki-tae’s lab, which has accumulated world-class research achievements,” adding, “We will start by creating an environment in university research sites where researchers can break free from repetitive tasks and focus on creative research.”

Meanwhile, Liner is pursuing the development of scientific AI agents by participating in the Ministry of Science and ICT's 'K-Moonshot' project. Last year, three papers written using Liner Scholar were accepted for 'Agents4Science 2025,' hosted by Stanford University; among them, a paper by Choi Jae-young, a student at the Korea Science Academy, was selected as a 'Spotlight' paper. The company plans to build an AI for Science ecosystem by expanding cooperation with universities and research institutions based on its global academic database of over 500 million records and Agentic Research technology.
