The Steam store is already well known for offering massive discounts year-round on a variety of games, ranging from indie to triple-A, but only once in a blue moon do we get a fantastic game to keep at no cost whatsoever. Even the rare times when Steam does let you permanently keep games for free, it's usually much smaller indie titles rather than the $40 experience that players are currently overlooking.

Offering an excellent single-player campaign, endless hours of multiplayer potential, and several optional paid DLC to take the experience even further, this sci-fi game is one that is well worth booting up Steam to claim, even if you don't plan on playing it right away.

Having been released in 2018, the entirety of the 4X strategy game Warhammer 40,000: Gladius - Relics of War is free to claim on Steam until May 28, leaving only a few days left to sink your teeth into the planetary conquest simulator without any strings attached. Even if you're unfamiliar with the Warhammer setting as a whole, the turn-based formula of Gladius will still be familiar if you've played similar games in the genre like Sid Meier's Civilization.

Offering four distinct factions with the humanoid Astra Militarium, super-soldier Space Marines, barbaric Orks, or undead legions of robotic Necrons, each has its own unique playstyle and technology tree that stands out from the others in more than just design. Gladius isn't just about fighting and conquering other factions either, as it still contains the same city-building and rich story campaigns that you would expect from a classic strategy game.

It isn't just other NPC factions or players you'll have to worry about in Gladius's campaign or mock battles alone, as managing your own faction and facing off against the hostile wildlife of the planet also poses its own unique challenges, which help aid in Gladius' addictive gameplay loop as one of the best games in the franchise.

While the Warhammer franchise has games for virtually every genre out there, from innovative new CRPGs, hack-and-slash shooters, all the way to intergalactic strategy, the turn-based gameplay of Gladius strikes a nice balance between grand strategy without feeling too overwhelming for beginners.

If you do end up wanting more out of the experience, however, Gladius also has a plethora of paid DLC that expands the experience even further with new units and features, but most notably, the option to purchase several brand-new factions like the elf-like Drukhari, trigger-happy Tau, and ravenous Tyranids.

Being offered as a part of the series' festival of Skulls, all the DLC for Gladius is currently on sale until May 28 as well, alongside a massive array of entries from the franchise, which have just about something for everyone, even if they unfortunately aren't free to claim, unlike Warhammer 40,000: Gladius - Relics of War.
