“The Era of AI for Breast Cancer Risk Prediction”… Lunit Expects to Seize Market Preemption Amid U.S. NCCN Guideline Revision
Lunit is accelerating its efforts to secure a leading position in the AI-based breast cancer risk prediction market following the revision of U.S. breast cancer screening guidelines. It announced on the 18th that an image-based risk assessment method has been newly included in the 'Breast Cancer Screening and Diagnosis Guidelines' recently released by the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN).
The NCCN is a non-profit medical alliance comprised of major U.S. cancer centers and research institutions, and its guidelines are regarded as authoritative standards used as standard guidelines in global cancer diagnosis and screening.
In this amendment, a new criterion for identifying high-risk breast cancer groups has been added: 'a 5-year risk of developing invasive breast cancer of 1.7% or higher calculated using an image-based risk assessment model.' As a result, image-based AI risk prediction technology has been recognized as an official risk assessment tool alongside existing clinical assessment methods based on family history and lifestyle.

“AI Risk Prediction Moves Beyond Technology Validation to Clinical Standard Phase”
Under the NCCN guidelines, additional screenings such as MRI and personalized management are recommended for patients classified as high-risk. The industry believes that this revision has significantly increased the likelihood of a full-scale expansion of the actual clinical application of image-based AI risk prediction technology.
In line with this, Lunit also plans to fully launch its AI-based breast cancer risk prediction solution, 'Lunit INSIGHT Risk,' in the U.S. market. Lunit INSIGHT Risk is an AI solution that predicts the risk of developing breast cancer within the next five years using only mammography images and patient age information. Its key feature is the ability to calculate individual absolute risk based solely on images, without the need for separate genetic or blood tests.
The product was designated as a Breakthrough Device by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) last year and is currently undergoing the 510(k) pre-market approval process. The company aims to obtain FDA approval within the year.
"The revision of the NCCN guidelines signifies that image-based AI risk prediction technology has entered a stage where it is utilized in actual clinical practice," said Seo Beom-seok, CEO of Lunit. "We plan to focus on securing a leading position in the U.S. breast cancer market after obtaining FDA approval."
