The Era of Ideas Ends for 'Art-Tech'… Only Companies with Trust and Systems Will Survive
The art sculpture investment market is shifting from an 'idea competition' to a 'survival competition.' As discussions on the institutionalization of investment contract securities intensify, it is predicted that only companies equipped with trust, internal controls, and profit structures will survive.
According to the industry, the art tech market, which once garnered attention for the novelty of “investing in paintings by splitting them like stocks,” has entered a full-scale process of separating the wheat from the chaff.
This structure, in which multiple investors share ownership of high-value artworks and earn profits when their value increases, garnered attention in Korea as a new investment model between 2021 and 2022. With the successive emergence of related platforms, it was also noted that this lowered the barrier to entry for the art market.

However, as of May 2026, the market's questions have changed. Key criteria have become who determines artwork prices, whether buying and selling are smooth, whether investment recovery is possible, and whether the platform is trustworthy. Analysis suggests that art tech is no longer merely a new business, but has entered a stage where its institutional and operational capabilities are being verified.
The biggest change is the anticipation of integration into the institutional framework. Until now, investment in sculpture has been situated between an innovative industry and a regulatory blind spot.
An industry insider pointed out, “As discussions on the investment contract securities system and financial authorities’ reviews begin in earnest, market standards are rising,” adding, “Platforms that prioritize marketing alone will inevitably find their footing shrinking.” This implies that only companies equipped with internal controls, investor protection, information disclosure, transaction structures, and artwork management systems can gain the trust of the regulatory framework.
The venture capital industry is also re-examining this market for the same reason. Ahn Ji-hoon, Director of the Social Innovation Research Institute, stated, “Investors look not only at novel ideas but also at institutionalization potential and actual revenue structures,” adding that “Art-Tech is a market where three trends converge: demand for alternative assets, digitalization, and the expansion of consumption based on personal taste.” He further assessed, “While expectations were the basis for investment in the past, operational capability and sustainability are now the criteria.”

Competition for domestic market dominance… Distinct survival strategies by platform
The leading player is Yeolmae Company. Led by CEO Kim Jae-wook, the company issued Korea's first investment contract securities through its platform, 'Art & Guide.' It has built a track record of issuance starting with Yayoi Kusama's 'Pumpkin,' and last year, it achieved a successful subscription rate with a product featuring the work of Zhang Xiaogang. Revenue is also steadily improving. This year, the company is expanding beyond artworks to pursue the issuance of investment contract securities based on raw materials such as copper and rare earth elements.
The two major auction houses are also accelerating their market expansion. K-Auction has made a full-scale entry by acquiring Together Art, a sculpture investment platform. It is showcasing products based on works by domestic and international artists such as Lee Ufan and Yayoi Kusama, and is enhancing credibility through in-house storage and collaborations with securities firms.
Seoul Auction Blue operates the platform 'Sotu'. Its strength lies in a structure that handles the entire process from artwork selection to storage and liquidation in a single flow, leveraging the artwork sourcing capabilities and storage infrastructure of its parent company, Seoul Auction.
The global market has proven it… “Companies that design trust win”
Overseas markets point in the same direction. Masterworks in the U.S. is cited as a prime example of popularizing art and sculpture investment through data-driven artwork selection, membership management, and liquidity design. Artsy has grown into a platform connecting artists, galleries, and collectors, while Verisart in Singapore is focusing on solving issues of authenticating works and managing transaction history using blockchain. The companies that have survived all demonstrate that they are not merely "companies that sell artwork," but "companies that design trust."
Another competitive edge is experience. Art cannot be explained by numbers alone, nor is its appeal fully defined by calculating returns. The story behind the artwork, the artist's worldview, the exhibition experience, and the satisfaction of ownership all work together. This is why art tech companies have recently been strengthening their exhibition, membership, and community services. Customers remain only when both investment and consumption based on personal taste are satisfied simultaneously.
Of course, it is difficult to conclude that the market will grow explosively in the short term. The domestic venture investment market remains conservative, and investors are indifferent to platforms that fail to generate returns. Standardizing art valuations, revitalizing trading, and expanding the exit market are also unresolved challenges. While the STO-related legislation has passed, the refinement of enforcement decrees and detailed regulations is still ongoing. Many analysts believe that the speed at which the market grows depends on how these enforcement decrees are designed.
An Ji-hoon, head of the Social Innovation Research Institute, said, “Art-tech is not a buzzword but is being reorganized into an industry,” adding, “The market is now asking not how quickly something has grown, but how long it can be trusted.”
Standards are becoming clear for startups as well. It is no longer possible to persuade the market with 'new ideas' alone. They must simultaneously possess a structure capable of operating within the regulatory framework, a flow that investors can understand and trust, and a repeatable revenue model.
The next competition in art tech is not speed, but structure. And the company that completes that structure first is highly likely to become the market standard.
