US Market: Fed's Goolsbee says latest US inflation data is discouraging<br>ETMarkets.com
Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago President Austan Goolsbee said on Thursday that stronger-than-expected consumer and producer inflation data released this week were discouraging, raising concerns about the outlook for US price pressures, Reuters reported.

In an interview with CNN, Goolsbee said he remained cautiously optimistic that inflation could ease if it was driven by temporary factors such as tariffs, conflicts in the Middle East and supply-chain disruptions, Reuters reported.

However, he warned that inflation stemming from excessive demand, particularly from the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence data centres, would be more concerning and could require a policy response.

The latest inflation readings complicate the Federal Reserve's efforts to bring price pressures under control while supporting economic growth. Persistent inflation could limit the central bank's ability to ease monetary policy, particularly if demand-driven price increases prove difficult to contain.

Goolsbee's remarks highlight the uncertainty facing policymakers as they assess whether rising prices reflect temporary supply-side disruptions or stronger underlying demand. The distinction will be important in determining the appropriate path for US interest rates.

Reuters reported that Goolsbee's assessment comes amid concerns over the potential inflationary impact of geopolitical tensions, trade tariffs and heavy investment in AI infrastructure.

Goolsbee's comments also underscore the challenge of assessing how investment in artificial intelligence infrastructure could influence the broader economy. The construction of data centres and the associated demand for energy, equipment and other resources could add to inflationary pressures if spending outpaces the economy's capacity to meet that demand.

Policymakers will continue to monitor incoming economic data to determine whether inflation is becoming more persistent. Reuters has reported that tariffs and geopolitical disruptions remain important risks to the US economic outlook, while the strength of domestic demand could also shape the Fed's decisions on interest rates in the months ahead.
