The Assassin’s Creed series is still on course to return to China for the first time since its modest 2.5D spin-off in 2015, now with the mobile-exclusive title Assassin’s Creed Jade.

First announced in 2022 as a collaboration between Ubisoft and Level Infinite (Tencent’s publishing arm), Jade takes players into the Qin Dynasty period. After a run of beta tests, though, updates on the project went quiet. That changed in March this year, when Ubisoft confirmed Jade was still in development.

But Jade wasn’t the only plan Ubisoft and Tencent had for China. We have learned that the two companies also quietly had another major Assassin’s Creed game in the works for current platforms, only for the project to be scrapped before it could ever take off.

Gameplay and Details for Assassin’s Creed Destiny

This previously unknown project was led by TiMi Studio Group, the Tencent subsidiary that also worked on Jade. The start of development is unclear, but based on what we could gather, it appears to have been scrapped early, since most of the material we’ve seen comes from a February 2025 prototype.

Working under the title Assassin’s Creed Destiny, the game was set to take place in the Qin Dynasty just like Jade, but a few years later: Jade is set in 215 BCE, while Destiny is set in 206 BCE.

The following footage originates from the portfolios of various developers who worked on the project. It mainly showcases a mission in which a female assassin has to reach a mysterious artifact located inside a sacred palace besieged by the historical figure Xiang Yu and his troops. We can also briefly see early work on a boss fight involving the Chinese warlord.

Aside from this mission, the footage gives a look at other gameplay elements, such as the series’ regular stealth kills and the iconic leap of faith. One snippet shows the player wielding an umbrella-like spinning weapon in a placeholder test environment, with ink-brush-style ability icons, a health bar, and an ornate bar with a yin-yang emblem visible on screen.

Other animations show a male character using parkour to take down enemies. As is typical of the series, this suggests players could choose the gender of their character, unless it was merely a placeholder.

Additionally, the published material includes detailed close-ups of weapons featured in the footage, ranging from the player’s unique spinning umbrella to enemy arms like Xiang Yu’s imposing halberd.

A month before the prototype was made, TiMi announced its restructuring, splitting the studio into four teams handling different projects. Destiny was cancelled not long after.

Several other projects were cancelled over time. Athena, a third-person action game based on Greek mythology, was in development between 2024 and 2026. Another was Invictus, a stylized cyberpunk open-world game directed by Assassin’s Creed veteran Ashraf Ismail at TiMi’s Montreal division, with development ending after the closure of the branch earlier this February.

The cancellations also came after a shift that was already underway at Tencent. In 2024, Reuters reported that the company was moving away from Western franchises, which carry lower profit margins than domestic Chinese releases, and reallocating developers toward casual party games. Jade itself felt the effects, with hundreds of developers reportedly moved to the party game DreamStar.

Unlike Destiny, though, Jade was delayed rather than cancelled, and it remains in development. Ubisoft hasn’t disclosed a release date, so we’ll have to wait a bit longer to return to ancient China as a member of the Creed.

In other franchise news, we’ve also shared some tidbits about the story of Assassin’s Creed Hexe, the darker upcoming entry set in Germany during the witch trials.
