캐나다 토론토대학교의 Chi-Guhn Lee 교수는 ‘From a single model to multiple bodies’를 주제로 기조강연을 진행했다.

Next Generation Convergence Technology Research Institute Transforms Factories and Autonomous Driving with Physical AI… International Experts from University of Toronto, KTH, and Others Gather in One Place

As Artificial Intelligence (AI) expands into Physical AI, which directly controls real-world machines and robots, the direction of technological development in the manufacturing and mobility industries is changing. In manufacturing sites, technologies that automate production and logistics by connecting digital twins with robots are becoming increasingly important, while in the mobility sector, research is being conducted on autonomous driving technologies that enable self-judgment and movement not only on roads but also in unstructured environments such as agricultural fields. To apply these technologies to actual industrial sites, AI models, data, robot control, and on-site operational technologies must be integrated. The Institute of Advanced Convergence Technology (IAIC) brought together domestic and international researchers and industry experts to discuss the technological development direction of Physical AI and its potential for industrial application.

The Institute of Advanced Convergence Technology (Director Kim Yeon-sang, hereinafter referred to as KICT), jointly funded by Gyeonggi Province and Seoul National University, held the '2026 International Convergence Technology Symposium (ConTech 2026)' on the 8th at the KICT conference room located in Gwanggyo, Suwon, Gyeonggi Province.

This symposium, jointly hosted by Seoul National University and Gyeonggi Province and organized by the Institute of Convergence Technology, was held under the theme of 'Physical AI Convergence Technology in the Manufacturing and Mobility Industries'.

The event was attended by experts from the University of Toronto in Canada and the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), as well as domestic universities, research institutes, and industry. Attendees shared various technology examples, ranging from AI applications in manufacturing to robot-based logistics automation, autonomous driving, and smart agriculture, and discussed possibilities for international joint research and technology commercialization cooperation.

The first session focused on how to utilize physical AI in the manufacturing industry. Professor Chi-Guhn Lee of the University of Toronto delivered a keynote speech titled 'From a single model to multiple bodies.' Through a presentation covering the relationship between a single AI model and multiple physical systems, he introduced the future direction of physical AI technology. Following this, Professor Magnus Wiktorsson of the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), Professor Noh Sang-do of Sungkyunkwan University, Lee Sung-wook (CSO and Visiting Professor at Daim Research and KAIST), and Shim Young-bo (Head of Division at T-Robotics) presented the latest research and industrial application cases in the manufacturing sector.

The presentation covered smart manufacturing, digital twins, production logistics automation, and robotics technology as key agenda items. In particular, digital twin technology, which replicates the equipment and processes of actual manufacturing sites in a digital environment, and robot-based logistics automation were discussed as key technologies for applying physical AI to industrial sites.

It was also included as a major topic of discussion that, in order to increase the level of automation in the manufacturing process, not only the operation of individual equipment but also data from production and logistics as a whole, the operating environment, and robot control technology must be considered together.

From autonomous driving to smart agriculture… Physical AI expanding into unstructured environments

The second session continued with discussions focusing on physical AI and future mobility technologies. Professors Choi Jun-won and Jwa Eun-hyeok of Seoul National University presented autonomous driving technology and the data and related technologies required to implement unmanned autonomous driving services, respectively.

Autonomous driving requires a continuous process of perceiving the surrounding environment, assessing driving conditions, and controlling the vehicle. Due to this characteristic, it is crucial to integrate AI, sensor data, decision algorithms, and the control technology of the actual moving vehicle.

Dr. Hong Seong-hun of the Convergence Institute introduced the development direction of physical AI from the perspective of off-road mobility. Unlike regular roads, off-road environments have inconsistent terrain and road surface conditions, requiring vehicles to respond to changes in the surrounding environment. This presentation covered research directions for physical AI technology that take these environments into account.

Mobirus CEO Cho Byung-ho presented the potential for applying physical AI in the field of smart agriculture, focusing on autonomous driving and robotic technology in unstructured environments. Agricultural sites are characterized by constantly changing terrain, work targets, and surrounding environments, making it difficult to respond effectively by relying solely on robots repeating fixed paths. Accordingly, the combination of perception and decision-making utilizing field data with autonomous driving technology is being treated as a key research topic.

Rather than classifying manufacturing and mobility as separate technological fields, this symposium explored the intersections between the industries centered on the common technology of Physical AI.

This discussion covered how technologies utilized in digital twins, unmanned factories, and production and logistics automation can be applied to other industrial environments, such as autonomous driving and smart agriculture.

In addition, a foundation was sought to promote future joint research and technology commercialization cooperation through exchanges between domestic and international research institutions and companies. However, it was not disclosed whether specific joint research contracts or commercialization agreements were signed at the event.

Kim Yeon-sang, President of the Institute of Advanced Convergence Technology, said, “The 2026 International Convergence Technology Symposium provided a meaningful opportunity to share the direction of technological development in the manufacturing and mobility industries, centered on Physical AI, with domestic and international experts, and to explore new possibilities for cooperation.” He added, “Moving forward, we will continue to expand cooperation among industry, academia, research institutes, and government based on the Institute’s convergence technology capabilities, and strive to contribute to the digital transformation and technological innovation of Gyeonggi-do’s manufacturing and mobility industries.”

Taking this symposium as an opportunity, the Institute plans to expand domestic and international cooperation networks in the fields of physical AI, smart manufacturing, and future mobility, and to strengthen the foundation for international joint research and technology commercialization. In particular, it plans to continue cooperative activities that connect technologies held by universities, research institutions, and companies with the demands of the industrial field, in conjunction with the digital transformation of Gyeonggi-do's manufacturing and mobility industries.

カナダのトロント大学のChi-Guhn Lee教授は「From a single model to multiple bodies」をテーマに基調講演を行った。
