NVIDIA is reportedly ending production of the RTX 5090 and will now introduce a new model for enthusiasts, the RTX 5080 24 GB.
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 50 Lineup To Get Major Changes Soon, RTX 5080 24 GB Replaces RTX 5090 32 GB
The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 launched back in January 2025, and there have been many reports of the card getting EOL'd or facing production cuts, but none of them have been conclusive so far.

Well, it looks like a new round of reports is surfacing, according to which the GeForce RTX 5090 production will soon cease to exist. As per insiders, the RTX 5090 will no longer be produced, and the GB202 GPU it utilizes will instead be supplied solely to the RTX Pro lineup.

If we look at the current RTX landscape, the GB202 GPU is the flagship chip within the Blackwell lineup. On the gaming front, it is featured on the 32 GB RTX 5090, which is the fastest graphics card for gamers on the market right now. On the professional front, the same chip serves three graphics cards: the 96 GB RTX PRO 6000, the 84 GB RTX PRO 5500, and the 72/48 GB RTX PRO 5000.
One can easily tell why NVIDIA wants to refocus its GB202 Blackwell chip on the Pro front. The RTX 5090 has already reached prices north of $6000, and this is already Pro-tier pricing. DRAM continues to increase in terms of prices, and demand for AI continues to jump, this might have pushed NVIDIA to refocus its current supply of GB202 chips to Pro cards instead of gaming RTX cards.
The RTX PRO variants have also seen a massive surge in prices. This pushed many AI customers to get RTX 5090 32 GB GPUs instead, since they still offered better value. China and regions where these GPUs are banned are already retrofitting 1000s of smuggled 5090s with modified coolers and PCBs that make them viable for AI workstations and servers.
The reason this is happening despite there being export-compliant variants such as the RTX PRO 6000D and RTX 5090D V2 available is that those variants come with locked features, massive AI compute cuts, and lower memory.
NVIDIA RTX PRO "Blackwell" GPU Lineup:
| Graphics Card | GPU Cores | AI TOPS | FP32 / RT Compute | VRAM | Memory Bus / BW | Form Factor | TDP |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| RTX PRO 6000 | 24064 (GB202) | 4000 | 125 / 380 | 96 GB GDDR7 | 512-bit / 1792 GB/s | Dual-Slot / Extended | 600W |
| RTX PRO 6000 Max-Q | 24064 (GB202) | 3511 | 110 / 333 | 96 GB GDDR7 | 512-bit / 1792 GB/s | Dual-Slot / Full | 300W |
| RTX PRO 6000D | 19968 (GB202) | TBD | TBD | 84 GB GDDR7 | 448-bit / 1568 GB/s | Dual-Slot / Full | TBD |
| RTX PRO 5500 | 21760 (GB202) | TBD | TBD | 84 GB GDDR7 | 416-bit / 1398 GB/s | Dual-Slot / Full | 600W |
| RTX PRO 5000 | 14080 (GB202) | 2064 | 65 / 196 | 48-72 GB GDDR7 | 384-bit / 1344 GB/s | Dual-Slot / Full | 300W |
| RTX PRO 4500 | 10496 (GB203) | 1687 | 50 / TBD | 32 GB GDDR7 | 256-bit / 896 GB/s | Dual-Slot / Full | 200W |
| RTX PRO 4000 | 8960 (GB203) | 1178 | 37 / 112 | 24 GB GDDR7 | 192-bit / 672 GB/s | Single-Slot / Full | 140W |
| RTX PRO 4000 SFF | 8960 (GB203) | 770 | 24 / 73 | 24 GB GDDR7 | 192-bit / 432 GB/s | Dual-Slot / Half | 70W |
| RTX PRO 2000 | 4352 (GB206) | 545 | 17 / 52 | 16 GB GDDR7 | 128-bit / 288 GB/s | Dual-Slot | 70W |
We can't say for sure if NVIDIA will entirely cease production of RTX 5090 graphics cards till we get an official confirmation, but we may see a period where the focus shifts to the AI stuff, & returns to gamers once things start getting normal.
RTX 5080 24 GB For Gamers
NVIDIA is also said to be preparing an alternative for gamers who wanted the RTX 5090 in the form of the RTX 5080 24 GB model. Few details are available on this model for now, but it can feature similar specs to the rumored RTX 5080 "SUPER" model from a while back. This will use 3 GB GDDR7 modules instead of 2 GB on the original RTX 5080 16 GB.

Currently, the 16 GB model retails anywhere around $1499-$1999 ($999 MSRP), so we expect the 24 GB model to cost around $1999-$2999. The RTX 5090 is much faster than the RTX 5080 but also costs 3 times as much at the moment.
| Specification | RTX 5080 SUPER (Rumored) | RTX 5080 |
|---|---|---|
| GPU SKU | GB203-450 | GB203-400 |
| Clock Speeds | Higher (rumored) | Standard |
| VRAM | 24 GB GDDR7 | 16 GB GDDR7 |
| Memory Bus | 256-bit | 256-bit |
| GDDR7 Speed | 32 Gbps | 30 Gbps |
| Memory Bandwidth | 1024 GB/s | 960 GB/s |
| TBP | 415W | 360W |
All of this goes to show the state of gamers and the entire PC consumer industry in today's DRAM crisis, which seems to have no end in sight.
