Former American Idol contestant Caleb Flynn sat in court accused of murder this week as jurors heard songs he wrote for his mistress, while prosecutors tried to link his affair to his wife’s death.
Flynn, 40, is accused of murdering his wife, Ashley Flynn, 37, at the couple’s home in
Tipp City, Ohio, on February 16.
Prosecutors allege Flynn, who was an American Idol contestant in 2013, shot her twice in the back of the head as she slept before staging the scene to look like a break-in, according to United States news outlets.
He has pleaded not guilty and maintains that an intruder was responsible for the killing.
On Thursday, Flynn’s former mistress, Alleigha Botner, completed a second day on the witness stand after extensive testimony about the pair’s affair and more than 100,000 messages exchanged between them.
Botner, 24, told the court she now believes Flynn killed his wife, despite initially telling investigators she did not think he was responsible.
“I simply thought that it was way too much of a coincidence that she was all of a sudden dead on the day that he was going to divorce her,” she testified, ABC News reported.
Jurors were shown messages in which Flynn and Botner talked about killing Ashley Flynn and discussed the end of the marriage.
According to the Daily Mail, the lyrics were converted into audio tracks using artificial intelligence and played for jurors. Flynn appeared visibly uncomfortable as the songs were heard in court.
“If somewhere you feel this, if somewhere you’re whole, know that you still own every piece of my soul,” were some of the lyrics.
Botner testified that the last time she saw Flynn before he appeared in court was on the day of his wife’s death.
“The first thing he said to me was, ‘It didn’t happen the way we thought it would, did it?’” Botner testified, according to the Daily Mail.
