In a new interview with IGN, Hideo Kojima says PlayStation ended its involvement in PHYSINT during a Zoom call in June. He says Sony gave no reason, though he also admits he didn't ask many questions during the meeting, and that Sony hasn't been in touch since. Kojima stressed the two are "not in a dispute" after roughly 30 years together, but added that he would have liked to hear the decision a little earlier. His studio then spent three months looking for a new partner before landing at Xbox, which it was already working with on OD. Apparently, the interview was conducted before Bloomberg's report on the split came out. That report cited unnamed sources claiming PHYSINT was behind schedule and heading over budget, and that the Death Stranding games missed PlayStation's revenue expectations. Kojima Productions has since called the claims unverifiable and said it is healthy and profitable. Asked whether PHYSINT could still come to a Sony platform, Kojima said he doesn't know and that it's a question for Xbox. He added that he thought Xbox wanted to reach as many players as possible, but he wasn't sure and said more would be announced later. It looks like the game's platforms are still undecided.

#1 Looks like budget concerns #2 DS2 has not been a commercial success, it took a full year to break even on a very high budget of ~$150M. Sony could have done so much more with that money than tie it up with Kojima.I personally found DS1 enjoyable enough, but I wish it wasn't as weird as it was. Kojima is just getting weirder with each game and that's a turn-off for me, so I probably won't buy DS2 unless it's in some ridiculous flash sale and I'm feeling the itch for something a bit different. #3

I'm sure that impacts how long it takes to recover the costs. Just like you, I'll get it in probably another 6-12 months for 65% off. #4

Chrispy_Sony could have done so much more with that money than tie it up with Kojima.Yeah, waste another 300 million on a project that will never break even. #6
DrUsmanSaleemThat report cited unnamed sources claiming PHYSINT was behind schedule and heading over budget, and that the Death Stranding games missed PlayStation's revenue expectations. The Concord-tax
Causing Sony's answer to the question "How much money would meet with your revenue expectations?" to be
"Yes"
or
"A fuckton, squared."
It's not a surprise.
When you get to the level of pre-Concord Sony's revenue, you get to play in all kinds of expensive but speculative sandboxes. Now, that sand has too high a lease and the beans aren't counting.

kazuvikingYeah, waste another 300 million on a project that will never break even.DS1 broke even and gained profit for a sequel on PS4 alone. It's PC release was additional gravy. In classic Kojima fashion, it was also prophetic and released at the perfect time.
DS2 did not break-even before it's PC release.
Was that because not many people had PS5s? There were shortages and price hikes. How about economic turmoil and everyone watching every dollar they spend? Pepperidge Farm remembers.
What can be said for sure is that no one saw DS2 not being as popular as DS1 coming. Increasing the development costs by at least half didn't help either, but that too is classic Kojima.
vbq7qK68eyYAH4iRI LOVE DS1. I refuse to pay the asking price of $125AUD for DS2.
Chrispy_...I probably won't buy DS2 unless it's in some ridiculous flash sale...Prices of all these games have gone parabolic, it sucks and I wish its price wasn't stopping you guys. #7

I mean honestly, if you've played through 1, what more can you expect out of the game and most importantly its gameplay? I know I was totally fed up with the walking simulator at that point (and before the end, even). Story kept you going.

I mean I can't remember a single sequence of gameplay of DS1 that I really enjoyed playing. Some were exciting, sure. But its more like the gameplay was part of the narrative experience, not so much 'great to play'.
Compare that to an average MGS installment... and let's be real here, deep down we all want PhysInt to be a reset of MGS with someone just as cool as Snake. Kojima = MGS. Everything else is a side project. #8 I assume the reason is that his projects cost way too much, have massive overrun, and result in not much sales to justify all that. #9

For a sequel, you lose that originality. You already have a ton of expections and you know many of the characters which removes that discovery from the experience. Even subconsciously, you lose some of the apprehension and anticipation because you can trust/distrust certain characters and already know their agendas, which side they will pick if things get ugly, etc.
As a rule, games/movies/books/shows that succeed because of their originality are usually the hardest to follow up successfully. DS2 is no exception to that rule... #10

I guess Sony would rather not break even after 1y and incinerate the cash, as they have been doing lately. #11
jigar2speedLooks more like not woke concern. It's probably both, over the past decade all of the studios that are under the control of these mega corporations have ballooned into these bloated unsustainable tumors which either produce mediocre slop with ideologically questionable themes shoehorned in that barely break even or they just straight up produce nothing, either way they have been burning money at an unprecedent rate. #12
Chrispy_Sony could have done so much more with that money than tie it up with Kojima.Absolutely!
For example, Sony could have invested that Money for Physical-Disk-Factory Deconstruction!
Then they could have said to their Customers, "Guys, we would LOVE to sell you Games on Physical Disks, but there they are no longer produced!, so we have no other choice as to go all Digital!". #13 @jigar2speed
and one of the countries cryin "woke" the loudest, is part of why we have a problem in the first place.
if ppl other than white males had been treated differently in the past 400y, we wouldnt have to deal with now. #14
SnoutBaronI assume the reason is that his projects cost way too much, have massive overrun, and result in not much sales to justify all that.If that was the reason, then how do you explain Marathon?
That's a massive turd, and costs are out of control, and it's failing badly
Unless Sony really thought that this game would have also been a dud, it could have brought some $ back to Sony, but, we will never know how good/bad this game will be #15
AthenaIf that was the reason, then how do you explain Marathon? It is being published by Xbox now, so we'll get to know if it's bad or not. The publicity shoot did not impress me. I did like Death Stranding 1 and 2, though, so I am not going to fully judge it until I see gameplay. #16

While understandable, the low number of games using that engine is a crime against beauty and humanity.
Vayra86Kojima = MGS. Everything else is a side project. From my perspective, Kojima side projects are compelling "digital reality" questions the entire medium was invented to explore, while everywhere else with money continues to boomer-chase yet another gun-attachment simulator in an exploded assembly visualization.
I hope you enjoy DS2 one day! The opening alone is great at a big boy framerate and don't ruin it by watching it on Youtube.
I care far more about that than the quarterly earnings report of a corporation, even Kojima's! #17
FierceRedPersonally, I was there for the cinematics, Lou and Tomorrow, the Magellan railgun and the always enjoyable environmental horizon-scapes of the Decima Engine.Oh don't get me wrong there. I absolutely appreciate Kojima's vision and reflection on the world and its technology in games. Even outside MGS.

But we're really all here just waiting for the next killer stealth title, regardless.
Chrispy_As a rule, games/movies/books/shows that succeed because of their originality are usually the hardest to follow up successfully. DS2 is no exception to that rule...Yes, but then I would once again point at MGS and how it did succeed in being relevant for quite a few installments. And I would dare say they hadn't reached the bottom of the barrel yet either, even if the last one was a weird unfinished shitshow. Kojima's strength is, imho, almost entirely within that franchise, the characters and legacy and history it has built, and how the games tie into it. Still storytelling is central, but the gameplay just ties in perfectly.
I wonder if Physint can recreate that legacy. Tall order Add your own comment
