Shopify is leveraging agentic artificial intelligence to transform digital commerce discovery, lower startup barriers for small and medium-sized businesses, and reinforce its core payments and checkout infrastructure, executives said Thursday (Sept. 10).

Speaking at the Goldman Sachs 2026 Communacopia + Technology conference, Shopify Chief Financial Officer Jeff Hoffmeister and VP of Product and Head of Growth Archie Abrams detailed how agentic commerce feeds traffic into Shopify’s centralized operating system.

Whether consumer discovery originates on ChatGPT, Claude, Meta or open-source agents, Shopify retains its underlying transaction infrastructure, routing shoppers through its Shop Pay checkout and preserving platform monetization without altering revenue economics.

Emphasizing how AI tools streamline merchant operations for small entrepreneurs, Abrams said that with AI, entrepreneurs might need only one “superpower,” such as product design, because they can leverage AI tools to help with other tasks such as marketing, reports and operations.

“They really only need one superpower. [Shopify’s AI-enabled commerce assistant] Sidekick and other AI tools can help them with those other skills that do not come as naturally,” Abrams said. “I think that’s really the opportunity with AI and what we’re seeing.”

Asked about how agentic commerce is starting to impact the market, Hoffmeister said that while agentic commerce is in its early days, Shopify expects the technology to accelerate the global shift of commerce from offline to online and benefit both Shopify and merchants.

“When you start with an LLM and you do your searching there, you’re 2.5x more likely to end up right on the product page rather than starting somewhere in a general spot on the merchant’s website,” Hoffmeister said. “You’re going straight to the product you want, and then that leads to an uplift in conversion. We’ve seen roughly an 80% uplift in conversion.”

The executives also said during the event that Shopify maintains its growth momentum by capturing entrepreneurs early, noting that over 40% of active storefronts are launched by repeat founders; that the platform’s catalog taxonomy feeds real-time pricing and inventory data directly into external LLM engines, allowing small businesses to compete with major incumbents; and that the platform is mitigating the cost of tokens by levering prompt caching and new open-source models.
