Cygames’ newly established CygamesEdge brand will focus on smaller games developed over shorter periods, a strategy Japanese industry veterans believe could help the company avoid some of the ballooning costs, risks and expectations surrounding modern AAA development.
The Umamusume: Pretty Derby and Granblue Fantasy developer recently established CygamesEdge, a new brand dedicated specifically to small and mid-sized projects. Rather than pursuing enormous productions with lengthy development cycles, CygamesEdge aims to use smaller teams to create experimental games built around distinctive core mechanics.
The strategy has caught the attention of Japanese game industry veterans, including former Sega and Mixi producer Taira Nakamura, who described the move as “incredibly intriguing.”
Nakamura pointed to a familiar problem facing modern game development: expectations for quality continue to increase alongside development costs. For major publishers, that means individual games require increasingly large investments, while the financial consequences of a failure become correspondingly greater. That pressure can encourage companies to fall back on established franchises and previously successful formulas rather than take chances on unusual ideas.
Nakamura noted that recent years have produced numerous worldwide hits from small and mid-sized projects created with comparatively modest budgets, shorter development periods and unconventional concepts.
Players accustomed to large productions from a major company may judge a deliberately smaller release against those same standards, potentially criticizing it for insufficient content or production quality regardless of whether the underlying concept works.
Nakamura argues that the branding can reset expectations, signaling from the outset that these aren’t intended to be enormous AAA productions but smaller, distinctive experiences.
Former Capcom artist and character designer Akira “Akiman” Yasuda, known for his work on Street Fighter II, also praised the idea, but from a development perspective. Yasuda argued that creators gain valuable experience by repeatedly moving through the complete process of making and releasing games. As development cycles grow longer, developers naturally receive fewer opportunities to go through that process. Shorter projects could therefore help younger creators accumulate experience much faster.
Cygames itself says speed and flexibility are fundamental to the new brand. Small, tightly organized teams are intended to move rapidly from concept to release while experimenting with new technology and development methods. CygamesEdge will produce games internally while also partnering with outside developers, offering development assistance, funding and publishing support.
Its first test of the strategy is Where the Seeds Fall, a “dramatic collapse action adventure” with a main story expected to last only around three hours. Rather than padding that runtime, the game is designed as a concentrated experience built around descending a collapsing World Tree while managing wind, unstable footing and dangerous falls. Additional challenge maps and time trials will provide replayability after the story.
