Well, this is it.

Marquette is going to play these two matches and then start Big East play next week. Whatever fine tuning is left to do to the roster and the lineup and the rotation by head coach David Korn and his staff, these 180 minutes are all they have left to prepare the Golden Eagles for an encounter with a Georgetown team that is, as I write this on Monday before the new USC poll drops on Tuesday, ranked #5 in the country.

For the record: No, I don’t think that the Marquette men’s soccer team that is getting outshot 13.8 to 6.6 on average this season but is still somehow 3-1-1 is particularly ready for the challenge of a top five ranked opponent.

But that’s what these two matches are for. Both of the teams Marquette is playing this week were picked to finish last in their respective conferences. One of the two is outshooting teams on the year and outscoring them as well, but we’re only talking about a less than three shot/match advantage and nine goals through six matches. The other is getting outshot and has scored just twice in three matches.

These are matches you schedule to make sure you’re ready for the brunt of Big East play. These are matches that you schedule them to win them. Let’s hope we get a relatively worry-free trip through 180 minutes, and none of the nonsense we saw against Oakland, a team picked to finish fifth in the Horizon League. None of the nonsense we saw against Northwestern where Marquette attempted just four shots in the entire match and got lucky that three of them went in the net in a 3-1 win.

Does it feel like I’m harping on a point here? Sure, but also I watched Marquette go 6-0-2 in non-conference play last year before going 1-7-0 in the Big East while scoring just five goals in eight matches even though they were outshooting opponents 15-10 on average. Things are trending to be even worse than that on the offensive end of things, and I would not like to watch a “worse than that” Big East slate this fall.

But that’s for next week. Now, the Tommies and the Screaming Eagles.

Match #6: vs St. Thomas Tommies (3-1-2)

Date: Wednesday, September 9, 2026
Time: 6pm Central
Location: Valley Fields, Milwaukee, Wisconsin
Streaming: ESPN+
Live Stats: Stat Broadcast

This is the first ever meeting between Marquette and St. Thomas. That’s more about the Tommies joining Division 1 in 2021 than it is about anything else.

St. Thomas comes in unbeaten in their last five matches, although that’s really just because they lost their opener and haven’t lost since. The Tommies have shutout victories in their last two contests, although one was at home against Division 2 St. Cloud State. That was kind of a competitive match in terms of shots, although UST was up 1-0 just 13 minutes in. Their most recent match was a 1-0 contest at Milwaukee back on Saturday, which raises the question of whether or not the Tommies are shuttling back and forth to southeast Wisconsin for these two contests. It’s 2026, the guys don’t necessarily need to be on campus to be properly attending classes, right? Relative to MU’s upcoming match against the Panthers, UWM outshot St. Thomas 14-12 in that one, but a lot of that was in the second half, and UST scored their goal in the 52nd minute.

The guy who scored for St. Thomas against Milwaukee is Lorenzo Jacon, and that goal pulled him even with Jacob Nokken and Ednilson Voiles for the team lead with two each. Nokken is the points leader to this point of the year, adding two assists to get to six. Two assists is also tied for the team lead, as Owen Marshall has two helpers as well. To make matters more complicated for Marquette, Oliver Corris is UST’s shots leader with 11 on the season.

Moritz Krenc has started four of St. Thomas’ six matches in net, and that includes each of the last two contests. I feel like that means he’s the most likely starter here. He has the better stats in comparison to Damian Climent, although you could argue small sample size of just 180 minutes is throwing off Climent’s numbers. Krenc is stopping over 78% of shots on goal, and two shutouts in his last two appearances has his goals-against average down to just 0.75 on the season.

Match #7: vs Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles (0-1-2)

Date: Saturday, September 12, 2026
Time: 1pm Central
Location: Valley Fields, Milwaukee, Wisconsin
Streaming: ESPN+
Live Stats: Stat Broadcast

Marquette is 1-0-0 all time against Southern Indiana. The lone meeting was a 2-1 overtime victory back in November of 1994. From looking at USI’s record book, that was their last year in Division 1 until coming back up in 2022. That does explain not playing them again after that.

USI got their season started with a 0-0 draw against Milwaukee (hey, look at that, both of these teams have shutout the Panthers, nice measuring stick for MU here!) on August 20th, but they’ve only played twice more since then. Their second match, which was a 2-2 draw at Northern Kentucky was four days later, and then they had their home opener last week against IU Indy. That one went as a 1-0 shutout loss where the Jaguars scored in the 30th minute while Southern Indiana was outshooting them 14-9 across the stretch of 90 minutes. It was only 6-5 Eagles after halftime, which is a little bit curious. Southern Indiana will get one more match in before they visit Milwaukee, hosting Bellarmine on Tuesday evening, but I’m writing this on Monday to publish on Tuesday evening, so TOO BAD on extra information about USI.

Brian Novillo and Isaac Weidner are your Southern Indiana goal scorers so far this season. That puts them in a tie with Tony Murphy and his assist on each strike for the team lead in points. Kadiri Bello and Garrett Morris both have four shots to lead the Screaming Eagles in that column, and if I had to guess, they’re probably more likely to have an impact on this match than Novillo. All due respect to him, but he has 33 minutes played in two matches after missing the opener. Feels like his goal against Northern Kentucky is more of an outlier than actual information to understand their whole deal here.

Jacob English is the goalkeeper of record with 15 saves across USI’s three matches. He’s doing pretty well for himself, stopping over 83% of shots on goal so far. The Eagles are making his life a little harder than it needs to be since they’re getting outshot on average, and the fact of the matter is that he only stopped 68% of shots on frame in over 1,100 minutes of action last season.
