The Canon EOS R8 Mark II will be announced on September 15, 2026, along with a new Speedlite EL-5 II and R8 Mark II Ergonomic Grip. So far, the rumored camera specifications have been well received.
What tends to be hard to come by with Canon releases is images of the camera that can be published, so we have to rely on what is technically a mockup.
Below is a mockup of the EOS R8 Mark II. Unlike the previously published mockup, this one is 99% accurate. Nothing is ever 100%. As you can see, we have a much more angular body, a more pronounced EVF hump, and the removal of “EOS R8” model branding.
We have published these mockups previously for the EOS R6 V and PowerShot V1 and they have been very accurate depictions of what to expect as far as design goes.
Canon EOS R8 Mark II Mockup

There are a lot of reasons we're asked not to publish early official Canon images of upcoming products, and we don't think that'll change in the future. We're good with the “mockup” instead. This is what the EOS R8 Mark II will look like.
In some eyes, this design may have some “retro” cues, but that is up to the eye of the beholder.
I think the camera looks really nice aesthetically. It has some EOS M flair to it, and we like the hard edges. The add-on ergonomic “grip” that is coming will only be an addition to the bottom of the camera to give you some additional vertical space for your hands if you find the camera too small to grip with larger hands.
The new plate will still allow access to the battery door.

The outline of the camera isn't accurate, but we figured we'd cover this anyway.

In Closing
There is not much more to add as far as specifications go, though we'd like to have a good explanation of what the 2D images to 3D video is and how it will work. That seems intriguing.
Canon continuing to use the LP-E17 battery seems to be getting the most negative feedback, and it would have been nice to see a new battery. Canon likes to keep batteries around—or at least the form-factor generation to generation. That decision has its positives and negatives, and in the end, not everyone is going to be happy either way.
As far as we know right now, there are no lenses being announced alongside the EOS R8 Mark II.
I still don't think we can confirm 100% that the EOS R8 Mark II will launch at $1799 USD and €1879. It seems very likely though.
Disclosure September 8, 2026The header image of the EOS R8 Mark II is a very accurate mockup of the unreleased camera. There were likely AI tools used to create the image.

So…the C50 mated with a Sony.
Sorry guys😂

12I can already imagine a laughter and giggling on Sony forums/reddit
9Definitely almost my first, too.
“Why does Canon need a Sony design?” was mine.
From all the designs Canon could’ve come up with (like basically just an AE-1 housing for instance) this is the absolute most disappointing one. Hard pass.
14Well, while I share the disappointment, I wouldn’t make my decision based on how the camera looks, as long as it has a neutral colour and reasonably decent ergonomics (for a R8, that is).
Still, the stage is set for the jokes to begin😆
Last edited 1 day ago by m4ndr4ke 1Don’t mind the squared off top – actually quite like the look overall – but the grip looks less deep. Hopefully not and the ergos that we all know and love with the EP and R8 have not been compromised to keep size and weight in check. Will know enough. Looking forward to this one.
1Does the R8 Mark II have the electronic first curtain shutter, like the current R8, or just a protective curtain and fully rely on electronic shutter like the R6v?
1No mechanical shutter in specs does make it clear there is no EFCS and relies only on Electronic shutter. Hard pass on this camera if that the case given I shoot with flashes quite often.
-3It’ll be EFCS like the rest of the non-mechanical shutter cameras.
11Will be quite useful if it does still maintain EFCS as generally it does have slightly higher sync speed compared to mechanical shutter.
1Canon needs to release more lenses, a whole lot more especially since they shut out third party lens manufacturers.
15For the past few years, demonstrations showcasing the generation of 3D videos from DPRAW (still image) files have been conducted at the Japanese trade show “CP+.” Previously, the process involved converting captured images into 3D models using proprietary, non-public software, then importing those models into Blender to manually create the demo videos.
While it was explained at the CP+ venue that this feature was not merely an experiment but was being developed with commercialization in mind, it now appears that this goal is finally within reach.
At the time of “CP+ 2025,” support for DPRAW on models like the R1 and R5 Mark II was contingent on there being “sufficient demand,” but by CP+ 2026, the stance had shifted to “planned for support.” At the very least, it is highly likely that a software update for current models will be released. Personally, I believe that if the 3D model generation software showcased in the demonstrations is brought to market, it will offer tremendous value.
