“AI Fills Labor Shortages in Small and Medium-Sized Manufacturing Plants”… Trinio, the ‘Brain of Autonomous Factories,’ Created by CEO Kang Tae-wook and Business General Manager Lee Chang-min

According to a survey released by the Federation of Korean Industries (FKI) last October, more than half (51.4%) of regional small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are experiencing labor shortages, with the manufacturing sector accounting for 60.8% of these shortages. Given the continuous decline in the domestic population, the labor shortage in small and medium-sized manufacturing plants is a critical issue that needs to be addressed.

Trinio is an AI startup that addresses labor shortages in production sites by deploying AI to supplement insufficient manpower. It provides solutions that automate repetitive office tasks in manufacturing using AI, ranging from simple transaction entry to cost analysis and monthly settlement. Focusing on the problem that data is continuously accumulating in factories but is not being properly utilized, the company combines this with AI to automate tasks at a low cost and in a short amount of time.

Trinio co-founders CEO Kang Tae-wook and Business Director Lee Chang-min

AI handles repetitive factory tasks with an advanced solution based on reverse thinking

CEO Tony Kang and Head of Business Chris Lee, who met in the United States, co-founded Trinio last year. Viewing the emergence of ChatGPT as a catalyst for opening up a completely new world, the two met with professionals across various industries to identify sectors where AI could create tangible change. Judging that the manufacturing sector would see the greatest impact from AI adoption, they designed an AI transformation business model centered on the production floor. CEO Kang, a former Google engineer, serves as both CEO and CTO, overseeing product development, while Head Lee, formerly of PwC New York, serves as CBO, managing market development.

Although many manufacturers invest over 100 million won to implement and use ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) for data integration, administrative tasks that must be handled manually still remain. Trinio enables AI to perform repetitive administrative tasks by adding the user's business context to the existing ERP or MES (Manufacturing Execution System) used by clients. Particularly for small and medium-sized manufacturing companies lacking dedicated administrative personnel, where it is difficult to fully utilize numerous ERP functions, the focus has been on enhancing usability by integrating AI rather than replacing existing systems.

Companies with sufficient financial resources hire external experts, such as developers and consultants, at high costs to carry out AI transformation projects over approximately one year. Trinio's solution enables even small and medium-sized manufacturing companies to automate 10 office tasks using AI within one month at a reasonable cost.

In the actual implementation process, the budget planning work, which used to take more than 3 weeks to collect and organize data by department, was reduced to 3 hours, and the tasks of entering vouchers and writing reports, which used to take 2 hours a day, were also shortened to within 3 minutes.

As AI directly handles manufacturing data, technology to control accuracy and access rights has also been applied. Operational data is stored in accordance with the international manufacturing standard schema ISA-95, and a proprietary ML model performs data mapping. Additionally, guardrails and permission management layers restrict the scope of AI responses and user-specific data access rights, thereby reducing the likelihood of the LLM generating incorrect answers.

In data security, we took an approach opposite to the typical method of AI implementation. Instead of collecting data first and then adding security measures, we designed a structure that minimizes the scope of data transmitted externally from the outset.

While most AI companies apply security measures after receiving all data, Trinio starts with zero data exposure. The structure is designed so that only schema information is transmitted to the LLM, while the actual data remains within the country.

Expansion to Vietnam factory

Last April, CEO Kang Tae-wook participated in the economic delegation accompanying the President on his four-day visit to Vietnam. While Southeast Asian manufacturing still relies heavily on human labor due to relatively low labor costs, an increasing number of companies are considering automation following a 7.2% increase in the minimum wage starting this January. In particular, for factories where material costs account for a significant portion of production expenses—such as electronics assembly—it is more critical to reduce losses incurred during production and raw material procurement processes than to cut labor costs. Trinio is focusing on more efficiently managing the quantity and timing of required materials by automating the establishment of production and raw material procurement plans using AI.

Another reason for focusing on the Vietnamese market is its manufacturing supply chain connected to Korea. Since many factories in both Korea and Vietnam use the same ERP systems and share similar production structures, business automation methods established in one region can be applied to the other. Currently, factories in Vietnam that have adopted the solution are using AI to automate repetitive office tasks, such as monthly settlements, voucher entry, shipment report generation, production planning, and daily production reports.

If a robot is a hand, create the brain that moves that hand.

Trinio’s ultimate goal extends far beyond the automation of office tasks. Even as robots and physical AI become widespread in manufacturing sites, operational tasks—such as deciding what to produce, when, and in what quantities—still rely heavily on human judgment. Currently, Trinio is automating office tasks like voucher entry, settlement, and production planning using AI, while accumulating data on the factory's operational context and human decision-making that occurs during this process.

For example, if a factory receives an order for 800 products but is short on necessary materials, the task does not end with simply checking inventory levels. The person in charge must decide what level of safety stock to maintain, how much of the missing materials to order, and when to place the order. Trinio records the judgments made by humans in specific situations and recurring decision-making patterns as data, enabling AI to utilize this information when similar situations arise in the future. The direction is to accumulate data on the decision criteria of the manufacturing site while automating tasks previously handled by humans, and in the long term, to enable AI to perform the decisions necessary for production operations.

Even as robots and physical AI advance, an operational layer is still required to tell those robots what to make, when to make it, and how much to make. We are currently entering the realm of office automation, but in the process, the operational context of the factory accumulates in a machine-readable format. If the robot is the hand, we are creating the brain that moves that hand.

Currently, high costs and long implementation periods act as a burden for domestic manufacturers in adopting AI automation systems, and a significant number of small and medium-sized manufacturing companies are pursuing AI transition by utilizing government support programs. Trinio was selected for the Ministry of SMEs and Startups' Initial Startup Package in April of this year and registered as a supplier for Naver Cloud's manufacturing AI matching platform in June. However, the metric that CEO Kang considers most important this year is not selection for government projects or supplier registration, but whether actual manufacturing companies are willing to pay the costs and choose the solution.

To provide AI automation at a price affordable for small and medium-sized manufacturing companies in Asia, both the cost and time required for implementation must be reduced. Trinio has already been reducing the adoption period by automating 10 office tasks within one month, and plans to verify with figures how much implementation costs and time can be lowered as it expands its client base.

Our goal this year is to create a system that clients can choose and pay for themselves, even without government subsidies, rather than a system that is only adopted with government funding.

Trinio
