Monday, August 31st 2026 PlayStation May Delay Digital-Only Shift Following Rumors of "100% Physical Xbox Helix" by Cpt.Jank Yesterday, 01:28 Discuss (9 Comments) We recently reported that Xbox's disc-to-digital entitlement program and the new CEO's refusal to address questions about Helix's disc drive suggested that the gaming giant was moving towards a new all-digital future, starting with Project Helix. However, a competing rumor—via Eurogamer Spain—appears to be taking shape, claiming that there is internal chatter at Xbox about Helix being "100% physical."

The same report from Eurogamer claims that this rumor has placed pressure on Sony, who has already seen massive player backlash over its decision to end physical media production, to postpone its shift to all-digital consoles. The rumor claims that PlayStation has "realized it is leaving an opening for other market players to shift their strategy," by announcing the end to physical media early, with Microsoft being mentioned as one of the key "market players." The suggestion is that the December 31, 2028 deadline for an all-digital PlayStation ecosystem would be pushed back by "one or two years." A recent report that claimed the Xbox Project Helix would be a series of consoles, instead of a single device, lends credence to the rumor of an Xbox with a physical disc drive, since it opens the door for a continuation of the current split of digital and physical drives on the Series X|S consoles. However, we are likely still two years away from the official launch of Project Helix, so things may still change drastically ahead of the official launch. #1 Look PlayStation and Xbox it’s an easy fix just make the physical copy by ordering it. Meaning if a customer wants a physical game then their fav retail store, Best Buy or Walmart can put an order through for the customers that wants it… #2 Charge $100 for physical and $60 for digital. See how bad consumers actually want physical. #3

Just pulling random numbers out of nowhere? #4

lol is that even an argument ?
"put the Xbox helix at 2,000 EUR and the PS6 at 1,000 EUR, let's see how bad consumers actually want an Xbox." :)

You can add the production cost if you want but that won't be 40 extra bucks #5 Dont do the cold feet dance because some other company is responding to your very public decision. Of course they are going to take advantage of it. Should of thought of that before the announcement. Humans are terrible at predicting the future due to their own prejudices, but youd think someone was in the meeting whose job is to assess how are competitors likely going to respond to a decision or were they fired because they arent inherently a yesman? #6 Sony...you don't have a damn thing to combat against this lol. Xbox has been working towards this for a while and have plans for discs. You don't Playstation, and you thought people would ride along with it and be fine with it. Nope lol. #7

Estimates have Sony making 30% on digital and 15% on physical, 2:1 difference. 100 to 60 seems about right. #8

THIS... It would stacked more argument on why digital has more advantage than physical.

and the only combat to this is would be Xbox would offer cheaper physical editions, thus forcing Sony hand again

It ain't so much a big deal, Xbox don't have the market pen to on a global scale to bother Sony, and by guesstimates, Helix will (or should) cost more than Ps6.

Nothing is stopping Sony from releasing a drive add-on similar to ps5 pro, heck they might just use the same drive.

Ain't their print factories being converted or something

PS....I notice, there seems to be this growing trend of physical copies being sold out quickly, and it can't all point back to scammers..

Maybe its just me, but i think they are printing less physical copies on purpose as a way to get person frustrated and they end up purchasing digital #9

How is this not also convenient to the part where the console was going to be upwards of $1000?
Pretty sure that the profit studies gave grinning numbers, but not the number of sales, considering they need to take into account how the economy is predictably going to be...and unemployment is not decreasing. Not to mention that 2029/30 is 4 years away, defining a long period that humanity is speedrunning FAFO mentality for decisions at every scope you can think of.
When every AI-Bubble invested manufacturer is touting "2030" for the "stabilization", everyone and their pet fish think that this means that technology is going to become affordable again. It does sell a narrative, though, that the storm is over.
