The Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC)'s bonuses for the second quarter outpaced the firm's revenue growth, as shown in the firm's filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). During the second quarter, TSMC paid out NT$36 billion in bonuses, which marked a 50.6% growth over the year ago figure of NT$35 billion. At the same time, the firm's second quarter revenue of NT$1.2 trillion marked a 36% annual growth.
TSMC Paid 4% Of Its Operating Profit As Bonuses To Employees In Q2 2026
Bonuses have become a contentious issue in the semiconductor industry following the AI boom. The ball started rolling with Korean memory giant SK hynix, whose bonuses started to cross the billion dollar mark. In May, it was reported that SK hynix might have paid as much as $2.5 billion in bonuses on its operating income of $25 billion for the first quarter. The estimate was based on the fact that SK hynix pays out 10% of its operating profit as bonuses.

As if the billions of dollars in bonuses weren't enough, in August, it was reported that SK hynix had extended its employment benefits to even include workers' aunts and uncles. A tentative agreement outlined that the firm was expanding bereavement support to include employees' aunts and uncles to offer $215 in support and two days of leave.

Now, TSMC's SEC filings reveal that the firm's bonuses also grew substantially in the second quarter. The data shows that in Q2, the Taiwanese firm paid out NT$36 billion in bonuses for a 50.6% annual growth. The figure also represented roughly 4.7% of TSMC's second quarter operating profits of NT$766 billion. In percentage terms, Q2 2025's bonuses of NT$24 billion represented 5.2% of TSMC's operating profits during that period.
According to employees quoted by Taiwan's United Daily News (UDN), the firm paid out its bonuses on the 28th and they were higher than the previous payout, which was four months ago. When the firm was asked for comment, it provided the following machine translated response:
"TSMC is committed to providing its employees with compensation and benefits that are above the industry average. While taking into account external competition, internal fairness and legality, TSMC offers a diverse and competitive compensation system and adheres to the concept of profit sharing with employees to attract, retain, develop and motivate them."
