51 People Confess Their Awkward Social Disasters That Haunt Them Forever - Yahoo Lifestyle Canada

본문

Have you ever had a moment when you accidentally messed up a social interaction so badly that even years later, you can't help but cringe when you replay it in your head? Well... story time: When I was in university, I worked as a barista at a popular coffee chain, and we had this regular who would come in every day.

And, well, he was a collective crush among the entire staff. I'm talking women, men, young, older than young — we ALL loved him. He was kind, funny, and just stupidly gorgeous. Like, that kind of good-looking that you think they must be genetically modified to be THAT symmetrical. Well, I was fairly new to the job, and even though I knew his name, every time he came to the till, I'd pretend I didn't remember him and ask for his name for his cup.

And, as a quick side note: when you work at a large coffee chain, employees have a staff number — it's a little code you punch in when ringing up their food or drink so they can get their employee discount or free beverage. At our shop, employees also had to stand in line like regular customers during their breaks and order at the till. Which, as you can imagine, is an important detail for the upcoming disaster.

Well, a coworker was behind the gorgeous man, and my mindset was already in the "what's your number?" (meaning employee number) mode for the fellow barista behind him in the line. So when said gorgeous man got to the till, instead of asking for his name for the cup, I asked, "What's your number?" And he, thinking I was likely asking for his digits, said, "Oh, uh, sorry, I'm taken."

Then, instead of just explaining my mistake, correcting myself, and asking for his name, I DOUBLED DOWN on the number thing and said, "I mean, your credit card number." I was so mortified that I wanted to crumble to the ground and disintegrate into the air! He just smiled and said, "My name is Dan, if that's what you're looking for."

I just nodded and said that the coffee was on me, then literally walked away, red in the face, and told my supervisor I needed a minute in the back. (Enough time for him to pick up his now-free coffee and leave the building.) If it were a one-off, no problem. But I had to see this gorgeous specimen every single day for the rest of my university career.
