The Justice League is often portrayed as the ultimate superhero team. With icons like Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, and Green Lantern fighting together, defeating them seems nearly impossible. Yet throughout DC Comics history, a select group of villains has managed to do exactly that. Some relied on overwhelming power, while others exploited weaknesses, planning, or psychological warfare to bring Earth's greatest heroes to their knees.
These victories rarely lasted forever, but that is what makes them memorable. Whether it was conquering the planet, dismantling the League from within, or simply beating every member into submission, these villains accomplished feats that most comic book antagonists could only dream about. Here are six DC villains who did not just challenge the Justice League, they actually defeated them.
6 Ra's al Ghul
Few Justice League defeats were as devastating as the events of Tower of Babel, which ran through JLA #43-46 in 2000. Written by Mark Waid with artwork by Howard Porter and Steve Scott, the story revolves around Ra's al Ghul stealing Batman's secret contingency plans designed to neutralize every member of the League should they ever become corrupted or mind-controlled.
Rather than confronting the heroes head-on, Ra's executes Batman's carefully crafted strategies with ruthless precision. Wonder Woman is trapped in a virtual battle that forces her body toward complete exhaustion. Green Lantern Kyle Rayner is blinded, Aquaman is rendered unable to survive outside water, Plastic Man is frozen and shattered, and Superman is exposed to a synthetic version of Red Kryptonite that causes his skin to become transparent, overwhelming his senses.
Although Batman created the plans, Ra's deserves the victory because he recognized their potential and coordinated the attacks flawlessly. Every member falls almost simultaneously, leaving the League unable to function as a team before they even understand what's happening. His operation demonstrates that preparation and intelligence can be just as dangerous as superpowers.
Even after the League eventually recovers and defeats Ra's, the damage lingers. Batman's teammates are horrified to learn he secretly developed methods to incapacitate each of them. Trust inside the Justice League fractures, and Batman is temporarily removed from the team. Few villains have inflicted such lasting emotional consequences while simultaneously defeating the League in battle.
5 The Joker
The Joker normally focuses his attention on Batman, but when he decides to target the Justice League, he does so in spectacular fashion. Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo's Endgame, which concluded in Batman #35-40 during DC's New 52 era, showed how dangerous Gotham's Clown Prince becomes when he expands his ambitions beyond Gotham City.
Believed to have disappeared following Death of the Family, Joker secretly develops a highly specialized version of Joker toxin capable of infecting the Justice League itself. Superman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Aquaman, and the other heroes become violent, murderous versions of themselves whose only objective is killing Batman. Instead of protecting humanity, the world's greatest heroes become its greatest threat.
Batman survives only because he had previously created contingency measures for every teammate. Even then, escaping a Joker-controlled Superman and Wonder Woman requires every trick in his arsenal. The story reinforces an uncomfortable truth, that the League's greatest strength, their immense power, becomes catastrophic when placed under the control of someone as unpredictable as Joker.
Joker's broader history also includes victories over the League in alternate realities. Emperor Joker sees him gain near-omnipotent fifth-dimensional abilities after tricking Mister Mxyzptlk, while Injustice: Gods Among Us begins with Joker manipulating Superman into killing Lois Lane and destroying Metropolis. Across multiple continuities, Joker proves that he doesn't need to overpower the Justice League physically when psychological manipulation achieves even greater results.
4 Doomsday
When The Death of Superman debuted in 1992, readers expected Superman to face the greatest challenge of his career. What few expected was how effortlessly Doomsday would dismantle the Justice League before reaching the Man of Steel. His arrival immediately established him as one of DC's most terrifying physical threats.
At the time, the League's active lineup consisted primarily of members from Justice League International, including Guy Gardner, Blue Beetle, Booster Gold, Fire, Ice, Bloodwynd, Maxima, and Beetle's robotic ally. While capable heroes individually, they were completely outmatched by Doomsday's overwhelming strength and relentless aggression.
