"I wanted to show my father's voice again"… XR headphones created by GeeksLoft CEO Lee Seong-wook

I thought that if they cannot hear, I could show them the text right in front of their eyes.

My father, nearing 90, had lost almost all of his hearing. While conversing with people became increasingly difficult, he exchanged KakaoTalk messages more skillfully than anyone else. Watching this, Lee Seong-wook, CEO of GeeksLoft, had a question in mind. Wouldn't conversation be much easier if a person's voice could be displayed right in front of your eyes in real time? That small question eventually led to the founding of the company.

He was a researcher at Samsung Electronics developing display and video products, but he left his stable job to found GeeksLoft in 2019. The product born from this is the XR headphone 'Perisphere,' which combines audio and visuals. It is a new type of wearable device that simultaneously provides the user with sound and visual information.

Perisphere received recognition for its technological prowess in the global market by winning the Best of Innovation award in the 'Headphones and Personal Audio' category at CES, the world's largest IT exhibition, in 2026.

Lee Seong-wook, CEO of GeeksLoft

Leaving a large corporation to create 'everyday XR'

CEO Lee became interested in the XR industry while developing display and video products at Samsung Electronics. He witnessed firsthand the opening of a new era of interfaces with the emergence of Google Glass and Oculus VR headsets, and he began to harbor the desire to one day create XR products himself.

I wanted to try developing VR or AR products even within Samsung. However, for a large organization to move in a new direction, it requires a significant amount of time and energy.

Ultimately, in 2019, he left his stable job to start his own business. He was driven more by the desire to create the work he wanted to do himself rather than the idea of a lifelong career. While his experience at Samsung was valuable, the conviction that he needed to take on the challenge before it was too late led him to start his own company. After founding the business, his first concern was not technology, but 'everyday life.' He concluded that it would be difficult to change the market if XR devices remained merely equipment used for special moments.

Due to their weight characteristics, glasses struggle to function as eyewear if they exceed 80g. Ultimately, successful wearables must blend into daily life so naturally that users forget they are even wearing them.

That philosophy took a different direction from existing VR headsets. Instead of heavy and enclosed devices, they chose headphones, which people use every day, as the new platform. Naturally connecting the visual and auditory experiences within a single device became the starting point of Perisphere.

Main image showing the features of GeeksLoft's smart headphones

Connecting seeing and hearing into one

The reason he focused on headphones was to create a new experience that utilizes both sight and hearing. He believed that headphones held the greatest potential for the audio experience, and based on this, he sought to implement a new interface distinct from smartphones or VR devices.

“To provide a complete sense of immersion, both visual and auditory elements must be richly presented simultaneously. I wanted to fully unleash the potential of headphones.”

He predicted that the future device market would be reorganized around new form factors such as smartphones, VR devices, smart glasses, and smart headphones. In particular, he foresaw that smart headphones, which offer both immersive experiences and everyday usability, would establish themselves as a new category.

He believes that smart headphones are not a replacement for smart glasses, but rather another interface that offers a different experience. While smart glasses develop around visual information, he envisions smart headphones evolving in a direction that combines audio and visuals to provide a more natural, immersive experience. The Perisphere he describes is a product that embodies precisely this potential.

Ultimately, what Perisphere aims for is not a new type of headphone. It is a next-generation interface for everyday life that realizes the experience of listening to music, checking information, and communicating with people all within a single device.

GeeksLoft CEO Lee Seong-wook is explaining the 'smart headphone' market.

The point of acceleration has not yet come.

Despite achieving the CES Best Innovation Award, his view of the company was rather calm. When asked if there was a decisive turning point that accelerated its growth, he gave an unexpected answer.

I think we haven't reached the point of acceleration yet.

They also candidly discussed the reality facing manufacturing startups. Due to the nature of manufacturing companies, investors feel a heavy burden, and fundraising is not easy. They diagnosed that high market entry barriers for manufacturing startups still exist.

Nevertheless, he expressed strong confidence in South Korea's manufacturing competitiveness. He viewed the industrial foundation, which encompasses manufacturing, software, and AI, as a rare global strength, noting that new products and markets can be created when these sectors are organically interconnected rather than focusing on a single field. He asserted that this industrial ecosystem is the greatest competitive advantage of domestic startups.

An image explaining how to use Perisphere and how it is compatible with smartphones.

GeeksLoft is preparing to enter overseas markets through the global crowdfunding platform Kickstarter, along with mass production in the second half of 2026. When asked about plans for the next one to three years, he spoke first about the direction the company is heading rather than the product.

“Perisphere is a next-generation interface for everyday immersive experiences. And GeeksLoft aspires to be an 'attic for geeks.' There are so many times when the future right in front of us doesn't come easily. Our goal is to build that future quickly, enjoy the process itself, find fulfillment in it, and share the results with those around us, thereby enabling business to flourish.”

Perisphere, which started as a small idea for a father who had lost his hearing, has now grown into an XR device that won the CES Best Innovation Award. The future CEO Lee envisions does not stop at simply making a new pair of headphones. GeeksLoft's next goal is to create everyday XR experiences through new interfaces that change the way people see, hear, and communicate.

GeeksLoft CEO

Geekloft
