I sat in Parliament listening to the first reading of the New Zealand–India Free Trade Agreement Bill.

As I listened to the debate unfold, I couldn’t help thinking that much of the discussion was looking backwards, when perhaps we should be looking forward.

Trade agreements are never perfect. Every negotiation involves compromise. Every agreement leaves something on the table.
