Wednesday, March 18th 2026 Take-Two CEO Calls the Idea That AI Could Create a Game From Scratch "Laughable" by Cpt.Jank Yesterday, 15:41 Discuss (19 Comments) Strauss Zelnick, the CEO of Take-Two Interactive, has a somewhat complicated relationship with artificial intelligence, having previously expressed an interest in AI NPCs for more natural conversations while also having confirmed that GTA VI will feature no generative AI. Now, in a recent interview with The Game Business, Zelnick has once again commented on the capabilities and applications of generative AI. Addressing a question about Google's recent Project Genie showcases, Zelnick has dismissed the idea that generative AI could be used as a one-stop-shop for game development, saying that the gaming industry has always used technology to create great entertainment," adding that "an advance in technology that allows us to do our work better and quicker is great for us."Zelnick dismisses the idea that AI projects like Genie are a threat to the gaming industry and to game developers, commenting that "it's quite obvious that creation tools are a benefit to our industry," and that the notion that "AI tools can somehow create big hits kind of doesn't stand to reason." He reasons that generative AI may help developers create game assets, but that creating a hit game requires human engagement and creativity. Zelnick rounds out the AI discussion by emphasizing that Take-Two's goal is to create engaging, entertaining games, and that this requires creativity, adding that "technology can assist with that mission, but technology on its own will not replace the fulfillment of that mission." The executive goes on to explain that "the notion that somehow new tools would allow an individual to push a button and generate a hit and bring it to many millions of consumers around the world, it's a laughable notion." It's worth noting that there have been recent layoffs, like those at EA, that have been attributed to or followed by an increase in AI adoption, indicating that, while AI may not be capable of replacing artists and developers from a technical standpoint, it does not necessarily mean there is no threat.

#1 I feel like this might be a "640 kb should be enough for anybody" moment that we will revisit in ~20 years. #2cinemawareI feel like this might be a "640 kb should be enough for anybody" moment that we will revisit in ~20 years.I’m old enough to remember when AT&T’s CEO said “long distance will never be free”. #3
cinemawareI feel like this might be a "640 kb should be enough for anybody" moment that we will revisit in ~20 years.RemindMe! 5 years #4 Who cares really even the past few years games have become, boring and too demanding from big companies. How much worse can it get under these so called AAA game companies.
If you want fun games, play indie games where they focus on story and gameplay. #5

Visible NoiseI’m old enough to remember when AT&T’s CEO said “long distance will never be free”.I do not believe there is demand for more than 5 computers.

This one has more complex gaming:

Ai has already created games from scratch. They are just slop so no one cares about them.

The problem is still, that ML is not really AI in any meaningful sense of the word. Technology might help developers do things slightly faster, but it also has huge drawbacks if you try and use it too much and for things it doesn't do well. We can see from the upscaling debacles with UE5 the damage it can do, we end up with games that are totally unoptimized and run terribly because the devs don't put the effort in and just think they can use upscaling instead. #12 I've always said that AI is the wrong name for LLM. It makes people believe that it can do more than it actually can. #13 I think AI will enable small Indie Studios to produce Games for relatively low amounts of Money and People required to build it, that will look very much like Games that are produced by big corporations for 100 million dollars and more today.
GTA6 may be the last big Expensive Game we will see. Why pay 100 People to do things, that one guy can do with a some prompts?
AI-Games will also be cheaper. A Corporation that pays 100 People and use no AI, will have to sell the Game for MUCH more money. Are people willing to pay 200 Bucks for a Game when someone else charges 30 Bucks for a Game that looks basically the same?
Only time will tell. #14
kondamindefine game.Pretty much right.

Sure it'll make a game but it will never make anything enjoyable by modern standards.
Frankly I'm surprised so many of you disagree with him. Given the present state of the tools, you may as well be stating peanut butter is going to advance enough and make a video game. #15
R-T-BPretty much right.Yeah, i can see it being used to get some things done in an AAA titles but it's going to take a good while before it can make the next Todd Howard mas̸̠̝̮̺̞̟̠̱̱͓̳͈̳̠̀t̷̥̟͔̮̭̜̱̥̞̗͕̪̻̩̖̊̀͐͊̓͆̌̕e̷̡̞̤̥͎̪̻̞̟͇͍̘̯͆͋̆͛̔̄̄̈́̿̈́̈́̽̓̀͜͜ŗ̴̻̮̪̜̗͎̖̮͕̂̑̐͂͘ ̴͍̣̲̻͛̓͛̉̎͊̌͌̆̕̚p̸̮͂͌̌͑̈́͛͗͆̓͌̌́̚í̶̖͔̩̀̍͐̑͗͗͒̋ͅece #16

GigaherzAi has already created games from scratch. They are just slop so no one cares about them. The quote in context is about AI (or "AI") not being able to create a massive hit like grand theft auto. #17
but that creating a hit game requires human engagement and creativityI mean yes but no?
Step one being you actually need to give the masses something they want? and this for the most part is where most mainstream big devs/publishers have been failing.Hence them attempting to sneak into the indie scene by pretending to be a sheep in wolfs clothing.
Im not an advocate of Ai. But Im sure if you got the parameters and prompts correct. i.e - the things that people actually want/want to see in a game. Threw them in a bucket and allowed Ai to build off it. It could probably come up with a good or at least a competent game after a few attempts/revisions.
You might need a proficient writer that doesnt have any of that "extra baggage" that a lot of writers in the industry seem to carry and self insert into their scripts these days.
Games should always be fun and enjoyable. Not used as a platform to push or spread certain messages... Unless that message is about having fun with your friends. #18 This remind me of Minecraft made with AI, it's trippy af. Everytime you turn your head around environment constantly changes.
