In the AI era, the battle of EdTech is once again 'education'
Apple's DNA is the combination of technology and the humanities.
In 2011, Steve Jobs unveiled the iPad 2 and explained the secret to Apple's success as follows. Although he was at the forefront of technology more than anyone else, what he identified as the essence of innovation was not technology itself. It was a philosophy that innovation is only complete when technology understands humans and transforms their lives.

Now, 15 years later, the same question is being asked in the AI edutech market as well.
Generative AI is no longer a weapon exclusive to a select few companies. From Large Language Models (LLM) and AI tutors to automated problem generation and personalized learning recommendations, most technologies are rapidly becoming standardized at a high level. Now, "whether AI has been applied" is no longer a differentiating factor, but has become a basic requirement for entering the market.
Just two or three years ago, the atmosphere was different. During the period when the generative AI craze swept the market, there were quite a few cases where growth potential was recognized simply by being described as an "AI-based education platform." Investors placed high value on the AI capabilities themselves, and technology was accepted as synonymous with corporate competitiveness.
However, the market in the second half of 2026 no longer evaluates companies based solely on potential. Investors have begun to ask not what kind of AI is used, but how much the AI has actually enhanced learning effectiveness, how much student achievement and engagement have improved, and whether this can lead to a repeatable business model.
As the technology bubble bursts, EdTech is also returning to the essence of education.
The AI bubble is over… Both the market and investments are seeing the 'effects'
Such changes are also being observed in the global education field.
At the education session of the Jeju Forum held last June, Andreas Schleicher, Director General of Education at the OECD, stated, “Students must learn how to think before they learn prompts.” He emphasized that even in the era of generative AI, humans remain at the center of education, and that AI should be a tool to expand thinking skills and creativity, rather than a technology to replace teachers.
At the 13th The Forum held earlier, Kim Nam-ju, a professor at Gachon University’s Startup College, stated, “University education should be designed to go beyond the simple transmission of knowledge and foster unique human experiences and problem-solving abilities.”

The two messages are connected as one.
The point is that AI is a means, not an end, to education.
These changes are being directly reflected in the investment market as well.
In the past, the key question in investment evaluations was “how excellent are the AI capabilities?” However, now, “how high the learning effectiveness can be proven with data” has established itself as the criterion for judging corporate competitiveness.
Samil PwC Management Research also predicted that the EdTech industry would be reorganized around educational outcomes and operational capabilities, moving beyond competition in AI technology. The analysis suggests that companies that continuously improve learning effectiveness based on data—rather than the technology itself—and connect this to repeatable business models will gain a competitive edge.
Competition is becoming even fiercer as global big tech companies enter the education market in earnest. Companies such as OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft are expanding their education platforms based on generative AI and cloud infrastructure, while existing education firms are attempting to differentiate themselves by leveraging their content, operational experience, and learning data.
Ultimately, the competition in AI edutech is shifting from who created a superior AI to who utilized AI to create a better educational experience.

Domestic AI Edutech Creates Competitiveness in Different Ways
Although the domestic AI edutech market operates within the same "AI education" sector, the competitive strategies chosen by companies differ slightly. Some focus on advancing the AI engine itself, while others integrate AI based on their extensive educational content and operational experience. Still others are expanding their scope by creating educational services specialized for specific industries or acting as infrastructure providers offering AI practice environments.
A representative example is Riiid. Riiid commercialized deep learning-based learning analytics technology through its English learning service, 'Santa.' It pioneered the personalized learning market by building an Adaptive Learning AI that analyzes learners' accuracy rates, solution times, and error patterns to recommend the most suitable questions in real time. Initially, it proved its success in the TOEIC market, and currently, centered on the Socra AI platform, it is expanding its AI engine to various educational services such as Real Class and Real Academy, cultivating 'technology that designs different learning paths for each student' as a core competitive advantage.

In contrast, Icecream Edu places more weight on experience accumulated in the field of education than on AI. The public education content, platform operation experience, and vast learning data secured through its flagship service, 'Icecream Home Run,' are assets that latecomers find difficult to replicate in the short term. While the company has recently been enhancing its AI-powered student record and learning analysis functions, AI is essentially a tool designed to further refine its existing educational competitiveness.
Theta Lab selected the vertical market of healthcare professional training rather than the general education market. Through its flagship service, 'Ufolio,' it provides education and portfolio management services for medical professionals, focusing on strengthening the practical competencies required for professional training. Although the market size is relatively small, it is recognized as having secured a differentiated competitive edge due to its high level of expertise.
Elice Group specializes in building AI education infrastructure. It provides AI practice environments and cloud-based educational platforms to universities, corporations, and public institutions, focusing on establishing a foundation for utilizing AI in actual educational settings. Its core strategy is to provide an environment where AI can be learned and utilized, rather than focusing solely on educational content.
As such, while all four companies utilize AI, their approaches differ. Ruid has built its competitiveness around AI engines, Icecream Edu around content and operational experience, Theta Lab around specialization in specific fields, and Elice around educational infrastructure.
However, there is also a change that is common to all of them: they no longer compete by putting AI technology itself at the forefront.
What investors are focusing on is not the performance of AI models, but rather how much students have grown, how much learning effectiveness has actually improved, and the operational capability to link accumulated educational data back to service improvement. In essence, AI is no longer just a starting point for differentiation, but is establishing itself as a foundational technology for generating educational outcomes.
This trend is also confirmed in patent trends. According to the 'Edutech Technology Trends and Implications in Major Countries' published by the Korea Intellectual Property Research Institute, the field that accounted for the largest share based on patent classification (CPC) was not the AI algorithm itself, but 'educational operation or guidance (G06Q50/205).' This indicates that market competition is shifting from AI technology development to learning operations and effectiveness management systems.
Ultimately, the future competitiveness of edutech companies depends not on what kind of AI they possess, but on how continuously they improve educational effectiveness through AI and how they can prove those results with data. We are moving away from an era where AI replaces education, and instead, an era is dawning where companies that better embody the essence of education are chosen.

People over technology… The essence of education does not change even in the age of AI
The 'combination of technology and the humanities' spoken of by Steve Jobs holds significance once again in today's AI edutech market.
Generative AI has now become a technology accessible to everyone. Large Language Models (LLMs) are rapidly becoming standardized, and capabilities such as generating problems, producing videos, and designing customized curricula are no longer competitive advantages exclusive to specific companies. As the technological barriers to entry lower, the market has instead begun to ask more fundamental questions.
Have students truly grown? Have teachers become capable of providing better education? AI is not replacing humans, but rather it is effectively supporting human growth.
Ultimately, corporate competitiveness is determined not by AI becoming the protagonist of education, but by how deeply a company understands and implements the essence of education. This shift is clearly reflected in the investment market as well. Investors no longer rate companies highly merely because they have adopted AI. Instead, they place greater importance on how much the AI has enhanced learning effectiveness, how that performance can be proven with data, and whether it can lead to a sustainable business model.
In other words, future competition in EdTech is shifting from a competition over who creates a superior AI to a competition over who creates better education through AI.
AI will continue to advance. However, education remains a job for people. It is about helping students grow, enabling teachers to create better lessons, and fostering experiences where learning transforms lives. As such, the essence of what education should aim for does not easily change, no matter how much AI develops.
Steve Jobs found the starting point of innovation in the 'combination of technology and the humanities.' Today, EdTech also stands before the same question: technology must ultimately be directed toward people, and education must be a process for human growth.
Ultimately, even in the AI era, the edtech companies that survive the longest are likely not those possessing the most advanced AI, but rather those that most deeply understand the essence of education and can most effectively design human growth. This is because while technology can be quickly caught up with, the philosophy of understanding education and the experiences that foster human growth cannot be easily replicated.

Elice Group
