Visual Arts, the company behind the Key visual novel brand and titles such as Clannad, Air, and Kanon, has disclosed a major security breach that may have exposed more than 10,000 pieces of personal and confidential information.

According to a statement released by the company, the incident was discovered after the gold master build of Key’s latest visual novel, anemoi, appeared on an overseas website before the game’s official release. The unauthorized upload occurred on April 19, five days before the game’s April 24 launch.

An internal investigation reportedly found a high likelihood that a third party had stolen authentication credentials for the company’s cloud storage and internal portal systems, allowing access to both the game and other confidential data.

Visual Arts says more than 10,000 pieces of personal and confidential information may have been compromised. Potentially affected parties include employees, customers, business partners, job applicants, and other individuals connected to the company. The exact scope of the breach is still being investigated.

The company reported the incident to Japan’s Personal Information Protection Commission on May 11 and says it is coordinating with relevant authorities as the investigation continues.

While the leak of anemoi’s master build has been confirmed, Visual Arts says there have not yet been any confirmed cases of the other potentially compromised information being publicly distributed or misused.

As a precaution, the company’s online storefront, VA STORE, has temporarily suspended new orders and entered maintenance mode.
